@ButlerMSoccer Pulls Out 2-2 Tie at Evansville Despite Playing Extended Time Man Down

Playing a man down for nearly 48 minutes, Butler battled back from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 tie Tuesday night at Evansville. Captain Jared Timmer had both second-half goals for the visiting Bulldogs.

Following the result, Butler is 2-6-2 on the season while Evansville is 1-4-5.

Already down 1-0, Butler was dealt a blow in the 63rd minute as Alex Lehtinen was sent off with a red card after a controversial call on a collision with a Purple Ace defender. Butler would play a man down for the remainder of the contest.

Shy of three minutes later, Timmer evened the match with his first goal of the season. Timmer took a long pass from Derek Sutton and was able to push it by UE keeper Frederik Reimer. In the 70th minute, Timmer gave Butler a 2-1 lead by converting a penalty kick. The PK was awarded after Jack Haywood was taken down in the box on the back end of a give-and-go.

Ryan Clark, making his first start of the season and the second of his Butler career, was strong in goal all night. He made nine saves on the night, including several diving stops to keep the Bulldogs in the match.

Evansville's first-half goal came off a corner kick as Clark was able to make a save off the initial shot but Mathias Nors was able to score the rebound. The Purple Aces' tying goal came in the 80th minute as Clark made a diving save that resulted in a UE corner kick. Evansville put the ball in play quickly. Ryan Harris redirected in a shot from the top of the box to knot the game at 2-2.

The game went into overtime after Clark made a save on a headed shot in the final minute of regulation. Butler was then able to get off a shot from the top of the box, but it was blocked by an Evansville defender.

The pace quickened in the second overtime as each team had good looks at the frame. In the 103rd minute, freshman Logan Lee headed a cross by Kieran Geldenhuys to his feet, but pulled his shot just outside the left post. A minute later, a Butler turnover resulted in Clark being forced into a diving save. The teams traded saves 20 seconds apart in the 107th minute before the Bulldogs had the best look of the final stanza in the closing seconds.

A ball was played through to Timmer, who was able to get a step on two Evansville defenders as he got several touches on the ball to the top of the box. UE keeper Reimer came out and was able to separate Timmer from the ball with a slide 16 yards from the goal. The ball came to Lee, who took a shot with his left foot from 12 yards out as Reimer attempted to get back into net. An Evansville defender was able to stretch and barely get his foot on the ball to redirect it away from goal, preserving the tie as the clock expired.

Evansville used a 9-2 advantage in shots in the first half to post a 20-18 lead for the night. The teams combined for eight shots in the second overtime alone.

Butler's starting XI featured Eric Hollenkamp, Joel Harvey, Ethan King and Justin Savona for the first time in 2018. Timmer came on in a reserve role for the first time this season and led the team with five shots.

This marks the first tie in the series between the two programs, one that dates back to 1990 with the teams playing every season but three during that time.

The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround, hosting Georgetown Friday night at the Sellick Bowl in a BIG EAST contest. The 7 p.m. kick will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports Go app.
