Freshman
Logan Lee's goal in the 90
th minute gave Butler a come-from-behind 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Villanova. It marks Butler's second consecutive conference win.
Butler is now 2-4 in BIG EAST play with Lee scoring the game-winner in both of Butler's conference wins over the last eight days. The Bulldogs now have six points in the BIG EAST standings and are climbing toward the top six, which is the cutoff for teams to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament.
With 37 seconds remaining in regulation, the match was restarted with a face-off. Butler ultimately gained possession and began an attack up the right side.
Kieran Geldenhuys made a cross to the top of the box, which found the foot of Lee. His initial shot was blocked, but he collected his own rebound and sent in a low shot inside the left post to put the Bulldogs ahead with only nine seconds remaining. Lee had subbed back in the contest at the stoppage with 37 ticks left on the clock.
Combined with his game-winner at DePaul last weekend, it marked Lee's second goal of his freshman campaign.
The Bulldogs thought they had a penalty kick in the 87th minute as a cross by
Marco Charalambous looked to be handed down by a Villanova defender in the box. But the Bulldogs did not get the call and the match remained 1-1.Â
Senior
Michael Peay leveled the match at 1-1 in the 65
th minute as his low shot from the right side got by Villanova keeper Carson Williams.
Brandon Guhl assisted on the play. That goal was the break-through the Bulldogs needed after picking up the attack late in the first half and in the early minutes of the second 45.
Villanova's Zach Zandi had the first goal of the match, which came on a right-footed blast from 20 yards out in the eighth minute. His shot got just inside the right post.
Freshman keeper
Gabriel Gjergji hung tough, making six saves to keep the Bulldogs in the match.
Villanova held slim leads in both shots (17-15) and corner kicks (9-5) in the contest. Peay led the Bulldogs with four shots;
Griffin DeBolt had three.
Butler is now 4-9-2 overall to go along with that 2-4 BIG EAST mark. Villanova falls to 6-7-1 (1-5 BIG EAST).
The Bulldogs have a closing stretch to the regular season that features three BIG EAST matches over an eight-day period. That begins Wednesday night in Indianapolis as Seton Hall visits the Sellick Bowl. That will be Senior Night for the Bulldogs. The 7 p.m. kick will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Â
