The Bulldogs match up with Marquette Sunday afternoon in the team's final regular season home game of the season. The match is scheduled for Varsity Field on Butler's west campus. The BIG EAST Digital Network will stream the 1 p.m. kick.
Butler enters the game with six points in BIG EAST play. The team is 2-5 in conference matches. In addition to Sunday's match with Marquette, the Bulldogs will finish the regular season Wednesday at Xavier. The top six finishers in the standings qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Despite entering Sunday's match in ninth place, the Bulldogs control their own destiny in terms of qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament.
A win Sunday would give Butler nine points, which would put the Bulldogs in seventh place. However, Butler would then be able to leapfrog Xavier and guarantee a spot in the top six with a win on Wednesday against the Musketeers.
A tie on Sunday would still leave scenarios where the Bulldogs could make the six-team tournament; a loss would eliminate Butler from the conference postseason.
Marquette is 5-8-1 (3-3-1 in BIG EAST play). The Golden Eagles and Xavier are currently tied for the fifth spot in the standings with 10 points. Â Â
Â
THE SERIES: Butler owns a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series with Marquette. The Bulldogs have won four straight in the series, including a 2-1 win in 2016, the last time the two teams met in Indianapolis.
ONE YEAR AGO:
Joe Moulden scored the game's first goal, which was also the first goal of his Butler career, in a 2-1 win by Butler over Marquette Oct. 28, 2017 in Milwaukee. The score in the 47
thminute was a header off a free kick fromÂ
Lewis Suddick. Forty-one seconds later, Suddick fedÂ
Brandon Guhl, who scored from the right side. That flurry of activity proved to be all the offense Butler needed as the Bulldogs' defense was able to withstand 21 shots by the host Golden Eagles.
Eric Dick made nine saves, including several of the acrobatic variety, to preserve the win. Marquette's only goal came in the 72
nd minute off a left-footed blast from Connor Alba, just outside the box.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bulldogs came out aggressive in the first half, taking the lead in just the fourth minute in Wednesday's match with Seton Hall.Â
Logan Lee scored his third goal of the season, his second in two games, off a cross fromÂ
Brandon Guhl. The second half was a different story as the Pirates found the equalizer just 20 seconds in on a CJ Tibbling blast. The Pirates found the game-winning goal in the 50
th minute. McKenzie Carlton finished the ball into the right upper 90 of the goal off an assist from Spencer Burkhardt.
THERE THAT (FRESH)MAN AGAIN: For the second consecutive week,Â
Logan Lee was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winner in a Butler conference win. Lee netted the game-winner against Villanova Saturday, one week after depositing the game-winner at DePaul in a 3-1 win. Paired with Wednesday's goal against Seton Hall, Lee has three scores during his freshman season.
EXPERIENCE IN THE BACK LINE: Beginning with the team's win at DePaul Oct. 13, coachÂ
Paul Snape has made a line-up switch, moving captainÂ
Jared Timmer from the midfield to center back. He joins fellow captainÂ
Joe Moulden in the middle, while senior captainÂ
Kieran Geldenhuys has moved out wide on the right side. In the team's formation that includesÂ
Alex Lehtinen on the left side, the back line includes two seniors, a redshirt junior, and a junior.
SPREAD IT AROUND: The score at DePaul was the first goal ofÂ
Logan Lee's Butler career. He becomes the 11
th Bulldog to register a goal this season, including five freshmen. Lee joins classmatesÂ
Jack Haywood,Â
Louie Bulger,Â
Eric Conerty, andÂ
Eric Hollenkamp in finding the net in their first year.
FOUR SCORE AND…: Butler scored four goals in a match (vs. Marshall, Sept. 26) for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016.
NEW TO THE LINE-UP: Seven true freshmen have registered a start for the Bulldogs this season:Â
Gabriel Gjergji,Â
Louie Bulger,Â
Jack Haywood,Â
Eric Conerty,Â
Griffin DeBolt,Â
Logan Lee, andÂ
Eric Hollenkamp.
HELPING FOOT:Â
Marco Charalambous assisted on three of Butler's four goals against Marshall Sept. 26. He becomes the 12
th Bulldog in program history to have three assists in one contest in addition to Matt Morgan, who had four helpers against Valparaiso in a 1991 match.
HONOR ROLL: CaptainÂ
Jared Timmer earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll after scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie Oct. 2 at Evansville. Both of Timmer's goals came as the Bulldogs were playing a man down. The two goals at Evansville were his first scores of 2018.
DOUBLING UP: JuniorÂ
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs Sept. 22 against Providence, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career. Lehtinen started the scoring with a goal in the 25
th minute; he then followed that by converting a penalty kick in the 88
th minute. For his efforts, Lehtinen earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll.
UP NEXT: The final match of the regular season is on deck for the Bulldogs as they travel to Xavier Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. kick on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
