Kamar Baldwin's 26 points led Butler to an 84-63 win over visiting Detroit Mercy Monday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the young season with the win.
After playing Saturday night, Butler had less than 48 hours to prepare for the Titans' zone defense. After some early shooting struggles, the Bulldogs finished the first half on a 14-2 run to take a 40-22 halftime advantage. Baldwin had 13 points in the first half.
Detroit would not go quietly, eventually pulling within four at 44-40 with 14:39 to play. Butler responded by scoring the next nine points to return the lead to double figures at 53-40. The margin remained around 10 for the next portion of the game until a 12-1 spurt by the Bulldogs gave the home team its first 20-point lead (75-55) of the game with 4:28 to play, which essentially put the game out of reach. Five different Bulldogs contributed during that run.
Baldwin went 9-of-17 from the field, adding a game-best eight rebounds and six assists.
Joey Brunk registered double figures for the second consecutive game with 13 points. Brunk went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Senior
Nate Fowler added nine points and seven rebounds. Seven Bulldogs scored seven or more points.
Butler shot 52 percent for the game and made 19 of 23 free throw attempts (83 percent).
Antoine Davis led Detroit Mercy (0-3) with 20 points, but needed 21 shots to hit that mark. He had only two points at the half after averaging 31 points per game over the Titans' first two outings.
Butler forced Detroit Mercy into 18 turnovers.
Butler has now won 45 consecutive home games against non-conference opponents, the third-longest streak in the nation.
The Bulldogs return to play Friday night, hosting Ole Miss at 8 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will air on FS2 and tickets are still available. Following Friday night's game, the Bulldogs do not have another home game until Dec. 5.
