Aaron Thompson led Butler to a come-from-behind, 76-67 win over Presbyterian with a career-high 18 points Tuesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The visiting Blue Hose led by as many as 14 in the first half before the Bulldogs were able to right the ship.
"We have to give Presbyterian credit. We watched the film of their games with Marquette and UCLA where they played well and hung around until late," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "They came out and shot 65 percent in the first half. We weren't prepared and that's on us. I thought we responded well in the second half and held them to 25 points. It's good to get tested, to have to grind it out, and find a way to win."
With the win, Butler improves to 8-3 on the season.
Thompson hit eight of his 10 attempts from the field, besting his previous career-high of 15, which came against Princeton in his second career game. Thompson added seven assists and three steals.
In his second game as a Butler Bulldog,
Jordan Tucker posted 10 points and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes of action. He and Thompson were joined in double figures by
Kamar Baldwin (15) and
Joey Brunk, who narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Brunk added a career-high four assists.
Presbyterian (now 6-6 on the season) made 13 of their first 17 shots, including an opening 5-for-5 performance from three-point range to take a 34-21 lead with 7:11 to play in the first half. That was just off the Blue Hose's 14-point advantage earlier in the game.
Butler would come all the way back to take a 41-40 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the opening half thanks to a 20-6 run before Presbyterian led, 42-41, after the first 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs limited PC to 29-percent shooting in the second half after the Blue Hose shot 15-of-23 (65 percent) in the first half.
An 8-0 run by Butler gave the home team a 55-50 lead with 12:53 to play and the Bulldogs were able to stretch the advantage to 12 and take the win. Butler shot 55 percent for the game.
J.C. Younger led the Blue Hose with 16 points.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday night, hosting UC-Irvine at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Anteaters have already won road games at Texas A&M and St. Mary's this season. Tickets are still available for the 6:30 p.m. tip that will also air on FS1.
