INDIANAPOLIS – Butler scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 6-2 victory against the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Garrett Christman and his brother
Connor Christman combined to record four of Butler's five RBI in the outcome.
Garrett Christman notched his first RBI of the game in the bottom of the first inning to help BU tie the game at 1-1. His second would come in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly to left field.
Tyler Houston would come around to score each of the runs.
The game unfolded with a tied score after four full innings. BU took a slim 2-1 lead in the third off a
Michael Hartnagel RBI, but the Cardinals would fight back with a run in the top of the fourth.
The seventh inning proved to be the difference as BU scored four runs off three hits. Christman's sac fly broke the tie, but a dropped third strike from Ball State would give Butler some breathing room.
Harrison Freed struck out swinging for what looked to be the third out of the inning. The BSU catcher couldn't hang on to strike three and therefore was forced to throw down the line to first base for the out. The Cardinal first baseman could not complete the play and Butler would keep the inning alive.
Gehrig Parker scored on the play and
Connor Christman would follow in the lineup with a two-RBI single to right.
The game got interesting in the ninth with Ball State loading the bases, but
Quentin Miller would take the hill and get the final out of the game to give BU the 6-2 victory.
The win went to
Brock Balderson out of the BU bullpen. He tossed a full inning in the seventh to earn his first win of the season. Right-hander
Sam Hubbe was the BU starter. Hubbe struck out six over six innings and only walked two. Two Ball State runs came in off eight hits.
Butler will now shift their focus to the Western Michigan Broncos for a three-game weekend series.
