The Bulldogs look to continue their unbeaten streak as they play host to No. 20 Notre Dame (3-0) on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1PM and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports GO. Scouting Butler
Butler is 2-0, posting a 3-1 win in their season opener against Kent State on Aug. 16 and a 2-0 shutout against IUPUI at home on Aug. 20. Freshmen were the deciding factor in both matches, with all five goals scored by a newcomer.
Anja Savich had two against Kent State in the 9th and 54th minute.
Morgan Kloosterman supplied the game winner in the 40th minute.
Savich and Kloosterman each put one in the back of the net against IUPUI, with Savich finishing a cross from
Paige Monaghan in the 14th minute. Kloosterman sealed the victory with her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute. The Bulldogs also posted two wins in their preseason campaign, topping Illinois 2-0 and Wright State 4-0.
About the Opponent: Notre Dame
Notre Dame (3-0) posted a 1-0 overtime win against Stony Brook Thursday night. Kelly Moss was the hero, scoring the game winner in the opening minutes of extra time off a cross from Jenna Winebrenner. The Fighting Irish have also posted wins against Central Michigan (3-1) and Loyola Chicago (2-1).
Four players have scored a goal for Notre Dame. Along with Moss, Jen Westendorf, Sabrina Flores, and Brook VanDyck have put one in the back of the net. Eva Hurm leads the team with two goals.
Notre Dame finished fifth in the ACC in 2017 and clinched a berth to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. The Irish earned their 25th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and hosted a first-round match for the 22nd time in school history. Following a 5-0 win over IUPUI, Notre Dame knocked off No. 2 seed and SEC Champion Texas A&M 2-2 (4-1 PK's) in College Station.
Defense Wins Games
The Bulldogs only allowed six shots their first two games of the season, with only four on goal. Butler only allowed seven goals last season, a total that went down as a new BU record.
Double Team
Hannah Luedtke and
Leonie Doege combined for the clean sheet against IUPUI, their first of 2018. A season ago, the two keepers combined for 14 shutouts during the regular season, a BU school record. They helped Butler take down the nationally-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 2-0 on their home turf and also launched the program into the national rankings for the first time since 1996.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Anja Savich made a splash in her Butler debut, scoring twice to lead RV Butler to a 3-1 win at Kent State. The rookie scored her first collegiate goal just nine minutes into the contest and added an insurance score in the 55th minute. Savich was one of only three players in the BIG EAST to post a multi-goal game last week and the lone freshman to do so.
Up Next
Butler will hit the road for two games the following week. The Bulldogs will make the short trip to Dayton, Ohio take on the Flyers on Aug. 30. Kickoff is slated for 7PM and ESPN+ will broadcast the game live. Three days later, the Bulldogs travel to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the No. 18 Jayhawks, their second top 20 opponent of the season. Kickoff is set for 8PM EST and will also broadcast live on ESPN+
