The Bulldogs return to BIG EAST play Saturday night, traveling to New York to match up with St. John's. The 7 p.m. match will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Butler is 2-5-1 on the season, entering the weekend off a 4-3 overtime over Marshall. The Bulldogs have dropped their first two BIG EAST matches. St. John's is 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
THE SERIES: St. John's leads the all-time series between the two programs by a 6-2-1 margin. Both of the Bulldogs' wins have come in Indianapolis. The teams played neutral-site contests in 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2012 before becoming BIG EAST foes in 2013. St. John's has won three of the five match-ups since Butler joined the BIG EAST in 2013 and all five of those matches have been one-goal outcomes.
ONE YEAR AGO: The Bulldogs knocked off St. John's, 1-0, in double overtime on Sept. 30, 2017 at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. In the 105
th minute, Butler keeperÂ
Eric Dick saved the match for the home team with a sprawling save. St. John's Wilhelm Nilsson got free on a corner kick and his shot inside the right post looked inches away from winning the match for St. John's before Dick's dive and left-handed save kept the sheet clean. On the ensuing attack,Â
Brandon Guhl took a shot from eight yards out that SJU keeper Andrew Withers was able to save as he ran at Guhl. The rebound came toÂ
Alex Lehtinen and Withers fouled him before he could get a shot off. He was called for a foul and Butler'sÂ
Lewis Suddick calmly netted the penalty kick for the win.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bulldogs added some theatrics to end Wednesday night on a high note at the Sellick Bowl, coming away with a 4-3 overtime win over Marshall in a non-conference match-up. JuniorÂ
Brandon Guhl scored the second of his two goals in the 100
th minute, taking a centering pass fromÂ
Marco Charalambous and depositing it in the net for the game-winner. Butler had a 2-0 lead at halftime and was held a 3-2 lead before Illal Osmanu's goal with five seconds remaining in regulation pushed the contest into overtime.
HELPING FOOT:
Marco Charalambous assisted on three of Butler's four goals against Marshall. He becomes the 12
th Bulldog in program history to have three assists in one contest in addition to Matt Morgan, who had four helpers against Valparaiso in a 1991 match.
FOUR SCORE AND…: Butler scored four goals in a match for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016.
NEW BLOOD: Freshman
Eric Conerty scored the first goal of his Butler career with a tally against Marshall Wednesday night. He joins newcomers
Louie Bulger and
Eric Hollenkamp in picking up their first Bulldog goals early in their respective careers. Freshman
Jack Haywood has two assists on the season, including one in the last outing against Marshall. Six true freshmen have already started matches in 2018. KeeperÂ
Gabriel Gjergji, has started all of Butler's matches this season, while Conerty, Haywood, Bulger,Â
Griffin DeBolt, andÂ
Logan Lee have also gotten the starting nod in multiple matches.
UP TO HIS OLD TRICKS:
Brandon Guhl has five goals on the season, a number that is tied for the BIG EAST lead. His 12 points are fourth among conference players.
DOUBLING UP: JuniorÂ
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs Sept. 22 against Providence, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career. Lehtinen started the scoring with a goal in the 25
th minute; he then followed that by converting a penalty kick in the 88
th minute. For his efforts, Lehtinen earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll.
PRESEASON HONORS: Three Bulldogs picked up preseason BIG EAST accolades as seniorÂ
Joe Moulden and juniorsÂ
Brandon Guhl andÂ
Jared Timmer were selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST squad. Guhl was also named the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
BIG YEAR AHEAD: JuniorÂ
Brandon Guhl is a popular guy in terms of preseason honors and watch lists. Guhl is on the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. He was also selected to Top Drawer Soccer Men's Preseason Best XI Team (Third Team) and No. 31 on the TDS Preseason National College Soccer Players list, as well as being named to the College Soccer News 2018 Preseason All-America First Team.
NOT KIDDING AROUND: The Bulldogs put together a challenging schedule for the upcoming season as the Bulldogs will face four teams ranked in the preseason Top 25: Indiana (No. 2), Akron (No. 4), BIG EAST rival Georgetown (No. 13), and Western Michigan (No. 14). Columbia, Creighton and Xavier also received votes in the preseason poll.
ACCORDING TO THE COACHES: Butler has been picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll. The conference's head coaches voted in the preseason poll. Georgetown, which finished second to the Bulldogs in the 2017 regular season but won the BIG EAST Tournament, was picked to win the conference. The Hoyas received seven first-place votes from the coaches, while Butler picked up the remaining three nods.
UP NEXT: Butler takes another break from BIG EAST play, traveling to Evansville Tuesday night. The Bulldogs return to conference play Friday, Oct. 5, hosting Georgetown. Â
