No. 10 Marquette shot 57 percent from the field in pulling away from Butler for a 76-58 win Wednesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles with 32 points.
Marquette's hot shooting included an 8-of-16 mark from behind the three-point line.
"Our fans braved the elements to support us tonight, and our effort didn't show our great fans how appreciative we are," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "Markus (Howard) showed why he's playing like the best player in our league right now. He had a big night. I didn't think our team had the trust and connectivity that we need. We have to get back to playing Butler basketball."
Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 16 points.
Sean McDermott and
Paul Jorgensen each had 10. However, the Bulldogs were only able to shoot 33 percent from the field.
Marquette is now 19-3 on the season and 8-1 in BIG EAST play. That corresponds to the Golden Eagles' current eight-game winning streak. Butler falls to 12-10 (3-6).
Three of Butler's six made three-pointers came in a quick 11-0 burst that pulled Butler within six at 51-45 with 10:02 to play. But, Marquette would counter with the next 12 points to take an insurmountable 63-45 advantage with 6:34 remaining.
Howard was 14-of-23 from the field as he took nearly half of Marquette's attempts (51). Sam Hauser scored 19 points and Sacar Anim added 14. Marquette held a 37-30 rebounding advantage.
The Bulldogs continue their two-game homestand Saturday afternoon, hosting Seton Hall. Tickets are still available for the noon tip, which will be aired nationally on FS1 as the annual All-Access Game. That means both coaches will be mic'd up throughout the duration of the game, commercial-free.
