@ButlerMSoccer Heads to Marquette Wednesday for Key BIG EAST Contest

The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Marquette for an 8 p.m. (Eastern, 7 p.m. Central) kick in Milwaukee. The match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

Butler is 8-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 (seven points) in BIG EAST play. Those seven points have the Bulldogs alone in third place in the BIG EAST standings. The jumbled table includes Marquette (6-6-1; 2-3 BIG EAST) as one of five teams tied for fourth place with six league points. The top six teams qualify for the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament.

Butler brings a five-match unbeaten streak (4-0-1) into Wednesday night's match. The Bulldogs have not lost since Sept. 28. Butler's two conference losses have come at the hands of St. John's and Georgetown, the top two teams in the NCAA national RPI metric.

All 10 BIG EAST programs are in the Top 75 in this week's NCAA RPI report. Butler, at No. 25, is the third BIG EAST program in the rankings.

THE SERIES: Butler and Marquette have split 10 previous meetings, with a majority of those coming since the Bulldogs joined the BIG EAST prior to the 2013 season. Butler has won four of the last five meetings.

ONE YEAR AGO: Marquette took a 2-1 decision over the Bulldogs Oct. 28, 2018 in Indianapolis. Two first-half goals from Marquette would lead the Golden Eagles to victory.

Butler's goal came off a successful penalty kick just minutes into the second half (46:47). Marquette's goalkeeper misplayed a ball, grabbed a Butler player and was hit with a red card. Luis Barraza made six saves in the first half, but would have to watch the reminder of the match from the sideline. Butler would play a man up the rest of the way and out shoot Marquette 12-0 in the second half, but a stiff Marquette defense would not concede a goal.

WHAT A WEEK: After leading the Bulldogs to an impressive pair of road wins, Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. and Gabriel Gjergji were both recognized with BIG EAST weekly honors.

Cabrera, Jr. pulled off an impressive double, earning both Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week accolades. Gjergji was named Goalkeeper of the Week.

This is Cabrera, Jr.'s second weekly freshman honor of the season (Sept. 16), and the first weekly keeper award of Gjergji's Butler career.

Cabrera, Jr.'s five points led the league last week. He scored the golden goal in the 98th minute in a 2-1 double overtime road victory at Lipscomb on Wednesday. Following his late-game heroics, he netted a goal and added an assist in Butler's 4-0 BIG EAST win on the road at Seton Hall on Saturday.

In Saturday's BIG EAST win, Gjergji posted his fourth shutout of the season, making five saves as Butler knocked off Seton Hall. In the overtime win at Lipscomb on Wednesday, he logged nearly 98 minutes in the 2-1 win. He made two saves against the Bison.

OF NOTE:

  • Gjergji's 4.54 saves per game are second in the BIG EAST, while his four shutouts are tied for third in the conference rankings.
  • On the season, Cabrera, Jr. and Brandon Guhl are tied for fourth in the BIG EAST in both goals (five) and points (12). Cabrera Jr.'s four game-winning goals are second in the conference.
  • Freshman Hemi Nasser's goal was the first of his Butler career. He becomes the tenth Bulldog to score in 2019.
  • Butler out-shot Seton Hall, 26-15, which was easily a season-high for the Bulldogs. Nasser had seven shots.
  • Butler's nine goals scored through five BIG EAST matches are second in the conference (St. John's has scored 14 times in league play).
  • Butler is now 3-2 on the road in 2019, including 2-0 in BIG EAST play.
  • Jack Haywood's seven assists are tied for the BIG EAST lead. Alex Lehtinen, with four assists, is tied for sixth in the conference rankings.
  • After each found the net Saturday, Cabrera, Jr., and Guhl remain tied for the team lead in goals with five each.
  • Joel Harvey has scored goals in consecutive matches for Butler, his first two goals of 2019.
  • The assists by Louie Bulger and Ethan King against Seton Hall Saturday were the first points of 2019 for each; the assist was the first career point for King in a Butler uniform.
  • Griffin DeBolt missed his second consecutive match due to injury.
  • Saturday's win at Seton Hall was Butler's first four-goal game since a 4-3 (OT) win over Marshall Sept. 26, 2018.
  • After dropping its first two BIG EAST matches, Butler is 2-0-1 in its last three.
  • Jack Streberger, who had not seen action since the season-opener against Western Michigan due to injury, logged minutes Saturday.
  • After scoring the first two goals of his career in the Oct. 4 win over Providence, Brendan Hicks earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors Oct. 7.
  • The Bulldogs played three consecutive Top 10 opponents earlier this season. That included BIG EAST losses to Georgetown and St. John's, sandwiched around a 2-1 win over (then) No. 5 Indiana.
  • Butler limited Wisconsin to only four shots in the win Sept. 12; it marked the fewest shots allowed by Butler since an Oct. 12, 2012 match against Richmond when the Spiders were also held to just four shots.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs return to Indianapolis Sunday to host Villanova. The match marks the conclusion of a three-game road swing for the Bulldogs. The 1 p.m. kick will be played at Varsity Field. Part of Butler's Homecoming Weekend, the match also serves as Senior Day and Alumni Day.
