Guhl's Golden Goal Gives @ButlerMSoccer 1-0 Senior Day Win Over Villanova

**This story was updated from its original version as the goal was later awarded to Brandon Guhl.

Brandon Guhl's header off a corner kick found the net in the 103rd minute, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Villanova at Varsity Field in Indianapolis. The golden goal was Guhl's seventh tally of the season. Joel Harvey assisted on the game-winner.

For Guhl, it was a fitting end as he was one of five seniors recognized on the day.

With the result, Butler improves to 9-5-1 on the season. The Bulldogs' 3-3-1 BIG EAST record gives Butler 10 points in the conference standings with two matches remaining. Butler is currently in fourth, with the top six teams in the BIG EAST advancing to the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament.

Villanova falls to 8-7-1 (1-5-1 BIG EAST).

The match served as Senior Day for the program's five graduating student-athletes – Derek Sutton, Jared Timmer, Guhl, Alex Lehtinen, and Maurice Thompson III – with the group being recognized in a pre-match ceremony. Butler also welcome alumni throughout Homecoming Weekend as the program celebrates its 30th anniversary.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Less than three minutes into the second overtime period, Butler pressure resulted in a corner kick. Harvey stepped up to it and swung his left foot, which resulted in a curving kick toward the near post. Guhl and a Villanova defender both went up for it as the Butler senior barely redirected the ball, sneaking just inside the post.

Butler and Villanova went back and forth throughout the match, combining for 35 shots. The Bulldogs had two good chances in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Sutton played a low cross in front of the net, but Wilmer Cabrera, Jr.'s attempt was saved by Nova keeper Carson Williams. In the 72nd minute, Lehtinen fired a shot from just inside the left edge of the box. The shot from a tough angle beat Williams but caught just enough of the inside portion of the right post to ricochet out.

OF NOTE:
  • Gabriel Gjergji posted the shutout for Butler – his fifth of the season – making two saves along the way.
  • Butler out-shot Villanova, 23-12, and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Cabrera Jr. led Butler with five shots, including four on frame.
  • Butler improves to 6-2-1 at home this season.
  • Only one of Butler's five overtime contests in 2019 has ended in a tie. Butler is now 3-1-1 in those contests.
  • Villanova committed 24 fouls in the match, compared to 11 for Butler.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs have only two regular season matches remaining with the first coming Saturday night at Creighton. The 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central) kick will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
