Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | John Dedman

@ButlerMSoccer Falls to Creighton Saturday Night in Double Overtime, 2-1

Butler dropped a 2-1 decision to Creighton Saturday night in double overtime. The match served as the Bulldogs' final road contest of the 2019 regular season.

With the result, Butler falls to 9-6-1 on the season and 3-4-1 in BIG EAST play. Creighton improves to 8-6-1 (4-4 BIG EAST).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Jake Ashford scored the golden goal for Creighton in the 105th minute, collecting a rebound that ultimately resulted from a corner kick. It was Ashford's first goal of the season.

The game-winner by Ashford was the first goal since the 26th minute when the Bluejays tied the match on a Yudai Tashiro score.

Butler took an early lead as sophomore Griffin DeBolt scored in the fourth minute of the match to give Butler a 1-0 lead. The goal was DeBolt's second of the season.

BIG EAST IMPLICATIONS:
With 10 points in conference matches, the Bulldogs are now tied for fifth in the BIG EAST standings. The top six teams qualify for the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament. This means that Butler controls its own destiny with Wednesday's regular season finale as a win will guarantee Butler a spot in the field.

OF NOTE:
  • Creighton had a 23-14 advantage in shots Saturday night.
  • Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made six saves in the loss.
  • Saturday night was Butler's sixth overtime contest of the season, and the Bulldogs now have 3-2-1 record in those games.
  • Brandon Guhl led the Bulldogs with five shots.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs close the regular season Wednesday afternoon, hosting Xavier at 2 p.m. at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
