Butler enters the game with a 15-11 record, coming off a win over DePaul Saturday night. The Bulldogs are 6-7 in BIG EAST play, currently fifth in the conference standings. Marquette has been off for the last week, and has a 21-4 (10-2 BIG EAST) record.
THE SERIES: Butler holds a 22-18 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs. Since Butler joined the BIG EAST for the 2013-14 season, the Bulldogs hold an 8-3 edge in games played as conference foes. Butler and Marquette first met in 1922 and spent two seasons together in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (1989-90 and 1990-91, Barry Collier's first two seasons as the head coach at Butler). Over the years, Marquette owns an 11-10 mark against Butler in games played in Milwaukee.
FIRST TIME AROUND: No. 10 Marquette shot 57 percent from the field in pulling away from Butler for a 76-58 win Jan. 30 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles with 32 points. Marquette's hot shooting included an 8-of-16 mark from behind the three-point line.
Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 16 points.
Sean McDermott and
Paul Jorgensen each had 10. However, the Bulldogs were only able to shoot 33 percent from the field.
Three of Butler's six made three-pointers came in a quick 11-0 burst that pulled Butler within six at 51-45 with 10:02 to play. But, Marquette would counter with the next 12 points to take an insurmountable 63-45 advantage with 6:34 remaining.
MOST RECENTLY: Butler defeated DePaul, 91-78, Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs shot 54 percent from the field and held the lead for all but 27 seconds.
Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He added five rebounds, five assists and four steals. The decisive run came after DePaul had cut the lead to one point at 57-56 with 13:39 to play. Butler countered with the next 11 points, including three-pointers from
Nate Fowler,
Paul Jorgensen and
Henry Baddley.
Sean McDermott (15),
Paul Jorgensen (11) and
Jordan Tucker (11) joined Baldwin in double figures for the Bulldogs. McDermott led Butler with six rebounds.
ON THE OFFENSIVE: In Saturday night's shootout, DePaul actually out-shot the Bulldogs, 54.9% to 54.4%; however, Butler's greatest advantage came from behind the arc as Butler made 12 of its 28 three-point attempts. Butler is now 9-2 on the season when hitting 10 or more three-pointers. The Bulldogs have hit 10 or more three-pointers in six of their last nine games. The Bulldogs have also shot 40 percent or better from behind the arc 10 times this season, including Saturday's win over DePaul (42.9 percent).
The 91 points for Butler are the team's second-best output of the season, trailing only the 95 points Butler put up against Northern Illinois Dec. 8.
Tucker (two), McDermott (three) and Jorgensen (three) have combined for eight games this season hitting five or more three-pointers. In fact, each of the three has hit six three-pointers in a single game this season.
GIVE BUT LITTLE TAKE: The Bulldogs had 18 assists against only eight turnovers. This was Butler's eighth single-digit turnover game of the season. Butler is committing only 11.0 turnovers per game, which is second in the BIG EAST and inside the Top 30 nationally. Butler's +1.9 turnover margin on the season is also second in the BIG EAST.
Aaron Thompson and Baldwin each had five assists in Butler's win over DePaul Saturday. Both Thompson (4.2 assists per game; fourth) and Baldwin (3.5 assists per game; tenth) are in the Top 10 in the BIG EAST in assists.
SPARK OFF THE PINE: Butler has had the advantage in bench scoring in 12 of the team's 13 BIG EAST contests. In Butler's BIG EAST games, that combined advantage has been 336-120 (an average of +16.6 points per game). Jorgensen, Fowler and
Henry Baddley combined for 32 points off the bench against St. John's Feb. 12 as Butler had a 32-2 advantage in points off the bench.
Jorgensen has scored in double figures in five straight games, all in a reserve role. That dates back to the Jan. 30 match-up against Marquette. Jorgensen is averaging 13.2 points per game over that five-game stretch.
ON THE GLASS: Butler out-rebounded DePaul, 31-23, Saturday night. The Bulldogs are now 8-2 on the season when out-rebounding their opponent. DePaul entered the night with a +6.3 rebounding margin, tops in the BIG EAST.
Butler had a 14-2 advantage in second-chance points against DePaul.
BIG IN THE BIG EAST: Including his 25-point performance in the team's most recent outing versus DePaul,
Kamar Baldwin has registered five 20-point games in BIG EAST play. He scored Butler's first eight points of the game against DePaul. Baldwin is averaging 19.4 points per game in conference games, a mark that is fifth in the BIG EAST. Baldwin is also sixth in the conference with an .840 mark from the free throw line in BIG EAST games.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: Butler's defense limited Georgetown to 69 points on 37.7-percent shooting in the Feb. 9 win. Georgetown entered the game leading the BIG EAST in scoring in conference games at 81.7 points per game. The 69 points and 37.7-percent shooting were both the second-worst outputs for Georgetown in its 11 conference games at that point in the season. For Butler, the 37.7-percent shooting was the lowest percentage Butler had held an opponent so far this season in league play.
Georgetown's last field goal of the game came with 4:25 remaining. Butler held Jessie Govan to 12 points on 2-of-8 shooting; he entered the contest averaging 18.3 ppg. The Bulldogs limited James Akinjo to two points, almost 12 points shy of his 13.9 ppg scoring average.
PUTTING THE D IN DAWGS: Butler improved to 11-2 this season (and 4-0 in BIG EAST games) when holding its opponent under 70 points with the win over Georgetown. On the season, the Bulldogs are allowing opponents only an average of 69.3 points per game, which is third in the BIG EAST.
