@ButlerUBaseball Drops Midweek Game at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON – The Butler baseball team moved to 2-4 on the season after taking a 9-3 road loss at Indiana on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs scored the first two runs of the game at Bart Kaufman Field, but IU would take the lead in the third inning and provide insurance with four runs in the seventh.

Robbie McCargar hit clean-up for BU and ended the day going 2-for-4 from the plate. The Bulldogs ended the game with five total hits. Kyle Smith, James Gargano and Brody McGrath rounded out the effort. Gargano led the team with two runs scored, the other run came in from McGrath.

Butler grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. James Gargano scored off a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard and Brody McGrath would double the lead by reaching home on a passed ball.

John MacCauley struck out five of the first six batters he faced in Bloomington on Wednesday. The Hoosiers kept after the right-hander however and pushed three runs across in the third to take a one-run lead. Gorski homered to left field to record 3 RBI.

IU would add to their lead with an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth. Butler's final run of the contest would follow in the top of seven. Gargano singled up the middle and would steal home with two outs to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Comeback chances hit a snag in the bottom of the seventh as Fineman doubled to right centerfield for IU. The three RBI extra-base hit was one of just two in the half inning.

MacCauley was hit with the loss on the mound and Bierman was credited with the win. Butler used eight total arms, but MacCauley was the only one who threw more than one inning.

Butler will return to action this weekend by competing in the 2019 Russmatt Central Florida Invitational. Opponents include Saint Peter's, Central Michigan, Pittsburgh and Hofstra.
