Cincinnati and Marquette Up Next for @ButlerWLacrosse

Butler (3-8) hits the road this week, following a setback to Georgetown last Saturday. The Bulldogs will take on Cincinnati on Tuesday (April 2) at Noon, and then head to Marquette on Saturday, April 6, for a BIG EAST match-up at 5 p.m. ET.

Georgetown was able to hold the Bulldogs to three goals on Saturday, each scored on a free position attempt. Hannah Justice, Madeline Hooks, and KK Callaghan were Butler's three goal scorers.

The Bulldogs look to get Ashley Guerra involved this week. The sophomore is Butler's goal and assist leader with 22 and 15, respectively, for a team-high 37 points. Sophomore Ashley Steffes has been a factor in the midfield, winning a team-high 28 draw controls, as well as tallying seven goals and eight assists.

Captains Carly Hewitt and Jordan Fischbach anchor the defense, each with a high number of caused turnovers and ground balls. Hewitt has a team-high 22 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls, while Fischbach has picked up 20 ground balls and caused 15 turnovers. Amanda Rumsey continues to make the start in the cage for the Bulldogs. She has a .382 save percentage with 76 saves.

About Cincinnati

In the Bearcats most recent outing, they defeated UConn 11-9 to notch their first American Athletic Conference victory. Cincinnati jumped out a 7-1 lead before holding on to defeat UConn, 11-9, in the inaugural American Athletic Conference game that was played Saturday at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati. 

Monica Borzillo and Kylie Nause each recorded hat tricks while Giuliana Durso stopped 11 shots in goal to help UC to its third win in a row as the Bearcats improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the AAC.

Borzillo has been a problem for opponents offensively, scoring 36 goals and dishing out 27 assists in just 11 games. She has a team-high 63 points. Nause also makes an impact in the attack, with 22 goals and two asissts.

Durso has a 14.18 goals-against average in the cage so far, playing in all 11 games for the Bearcats. She has made 96 saves with a .434 save percentage. The Bulldogs fell to Cincinnati a season ago in Indianapolis, 14-8. Hallenbeck led the team with two goals in the loss.

About Marquette

The Golden Eagles opened BIG EAST play on Saturday as well, falling to Villanova, 15-13. The Golden Eagles (6-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) had three players record hat tricks, including Charlotte McGuire's first-half hat trick to fuel Marquette early on. Lindsey Willcocks led the squad with four goals of her own while Shea Garcia tallied three scores.

Marquette evened the score at 13-13 with 5:14 remaining, but after a late Golden Eagle goal was ruled no-good, Villanova scored two tallies in the final 4 minutes of action to hold on, 15-13.

Senior Grace Gabriel, the 2018 BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year, leads Marquette with 38 goals and four assists. McGuire also adds 31 goals and three assists. Juliana Horning (4-7) has seen every game in goal for Marquette, making 71 saves with a .341 save percentage.

Marquette defeated the Bulldogs a season ago in Indianapolis, 19-3. Guerra, Morgan Paige, and Karina Latsko each tallied a goal in the setback.

Up Next

The Bulldogs take on another two-game week following their tilt at Marquette, traveling to Notre Dame for a mid-week conference match-up on Wednesday (April 10), and hosting Denver on Saturday, April 13. First draw in South Bend is set for 7 p.m. and Saturday's home game is set for a Noon opening draw.
