Butler returns to action Thursday night, hosting Wisconsin at the Sellick Bowl. The match is the back end of a soccer doubleheader that begins with the Bulldogs' women's soccer team hosting Illinois at 5 p.m.
Tickets are good for both matches Thursday. All kids (eighth grade and under) receive free admission when wearing a club or school jersey. There will be approximately 30 minutes between the two contests. Both matches will be streamed live on the Butler Bulldogs Facebook page, and live stats will be available on ButlerSports.com.
The Bulldogs are 2-0 at the Sellick Bowl so far in 2019, posting a 2-1 win over Western Michigan and a 2-0 decision over Evansville.
Butler enters Thursday's match off its first setback of the season, as the Bulldogs fell, 2-1, at Marshall Friday night. Wisconsin enters the match-up with a record of 2-2, while the Bulldogs are 2-1.
The Bulldogs hold a 4-1-1 mark against Wisconsin in the all-time series between the two programs. The last meeting came in 2015, as Butler pulled out a 1-0 win in Madison. Wisconsin head coach John Trask was previously the head coach at UIC from 2005-09 when the Flames and Butler were Horizon League rivals.
Senior
Brandon Guhl has led the Bulldogs in the early portion of the season, scoring a goal in each of Butler's three matches. Those three goals are tied for second in the BIG EAST rankings.
Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., has a team-best 10 shots through three matches, a mark which is also tied for fifth in the BIG EAST. Cabrera, Jr., netted the game-winner in the season-opener against Western Michigan. The converted penalty kick was his first collegiate goal.
Logan Lee registered the game-winner in the 2-0 win over Evansville Sept. 2.
Alex Lehtinen and
Jack Haywood each have two assists to lead the Bulldogs. Lehtinen's output has come in only 86 minutes of action as he has battled through a preseason injury. He is a 2019 co-captain along with
Jared Timmer. Timmer has yet to see the field in 2019 while working back from an injury sustained in the preseason.
Cabrera, Jr., is among four newcomers who have seen extensive action in the early portion of the season. Junior college transfer
Rhys Myers has played every minute at center back.
Hemi Nasser and
Perrin Barnes have both started matches during their rookie campaigns.
Brendan Hicks and
Jack Streberger, who each redshirted the 2018 season, have also seen their first minutes as a Bulldog in the early going.
Sophomore keeper
Gabriel Gjergji has made 10 saves through three matches, posting a 1.0 goals against average.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs hit the road, traveling to SIUE for a Tuesday night match. It is the Bulldogs' last non-conference tune-up prior to BIG EAST play beginning Friday (Sept. 20) when No. 5 Georgetown and Butler play at the Sellick Bowl.
Georgetown is one of four upcoming Bulldog opponents currently ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. Indiana, Xavier and St. John's are currently in the Top 25, while Creighton, Akron and Villanova are currently receiving votes.
