The Bulldogs posted a strong showing in their first event of the 2019-20 campaign, spending the weekend hosting three local programs in the Butler Fall Invitational.
Ball State, IUPUI and the University of Indianapolis spent the weekend on the Butler campus as the teams combined for a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles competition.
Freshman
Filip Tensing made a run to the singles championship match, finishing the weekend with a 4-1 singles mark. Two of his victories came in third-set match tiebreakers as he fought by IUPUI's Eric Hollingsworth in the second round and the Jaguars' Alex Jochim in the quarterfinals. Tensing opened Sunday's play with a straight-set win over top-seeded Renato Lima (UIndy) in the semifinals before falling to UIndy's Dario Huber, 6-0, 7-5, in the championship match.
Tensing was joined in the semifinals by teammate
Thomas Brennan. The sophomore needed third-set match tiebreakers in each of his first three contests to reach the semifinals. He fell to Huber in the semifinals in straight sets. Brennan then pushed Lima to a third set match tiebreaker before falling 11-9 in the third-place match.
Junior
Michael Dickson and freshman Alvaro Huete each won two opening matches to reach the quarterfinals. Huete topped Ball State's Chris Adams in the first round before defeating his Butler classmate
Michael Karr in the second round. Lima upended Huete. Dickson had a pair of straight-set victories (over IUPUI's Nick Moody and Sean Bailey) before falling to Huber.
Karr,
Ryan Roegner and
Addison Cazier each won first-round match-ups for the Bulldogs. Roegner then moved through the consolation bracket with a pair of straight-set wins and then defeating IUPUI's Ethan Budiono, who retired.
After entering the consolation bracket, sophomore
Drew Michael won back-to-back matches over a pair of Ball State Cardinals, topping Colton Morehart, 7-5, 7-5, and Alec Robillard, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4).
Freshman
Zach Trimpe also picked up his first win as a Butler Bulldog, a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5) victory over Morehart in consolation play.
In doubles play, Dickson and Huete advanced to the semifinals before falling to a duo from UIndy. The freshman tandem of Karr and Trimpe also won their first match.
Freshman
Olof Wiklund withdrew from competition after Friday's matches due to illness. Senior
Sam Sullivan competed in singles while also teaming with Michael in doubles play.
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 11-13, making the short trip down I-65 for the Louisville Invitational.
