Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | John Dedman

@ButlerMSoccer Falls at SIUE, 2-1, in Double Overtime

Butler withstood a barrage of SIUE chances through nearly 110 minutes before the Cougars found the golden goal and a 2-1 win Tuesday night in Edwardsville, Ill.

With the result, Butler falls to 3-2, while SIUE is now 2-2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SIUE's Jorge Gonzalez scored in the 109th minute to give the host Cougars the win. He was assisted by Vincent Jackson II.

The Cougars held a significant advantage in opportunities in the second half with 11 shots and five corners. SIUE found the equalizer to knot the match 1-1 in the 60th minute as Corban McAvinew made a high cross that bounced once before Joergen Pettersen collected it on the right side of the goal and scored.

Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made five saves in the second 45 minutes, pushing the match to extra time.

Sophomore Griffin DeBolt got the Bulldogs on the board first, finding the net in the eighth minute off a Jack Haywood assist.

That was one of only two shots the Bulldogs had during the first 45 minutes. Gjergji was able to get Butler into the halftime locker room with a 1-0 advantage by making three saves.

In a showing of the Cougars' second-half attack, SIUE strung together three chances within 90 seconds just five minutes into the second half. The first was a pass in front of the Butler frame that rolled all the way through without a Cougar able to get a foot on it. Gjergji followed with a diving save on a low liner from Pettersen, and Jack Edwards' header on the ensuing corner kick was just high of the crossbar. SIUE finally broke through with the tying goal minutes later.

OF NOTE:
  • Tuesday's tally marked DeBolt's first collegiate goal.
  • Haywood now has three assists on the season, tying Alex Lehtinen for the team lead.
  • Butler played without senior forward Brandon Guhl, who is fighting an injury sustained in Thursday's win over Wisconsin.
  • The nine saves by Gjergji were a career-high, betting his previous high of seven against Creighton last season.
  • SIUE held a 22-6 advantage over Butler in shots; the Cougars also had nine corner kicks to just two for Butler.
  • Six different Bulldogs registered a single shot for Butler; four of the six were on goal.
