INDIANAPOLIS – Butler and San Diego are two charter members of the Pioneer Football League that established in 1993. The two teams faced off each year from '93 to 2010. The next meeting will mark the 25th game of the all-time series.
Butler vs. San Diego Football Timeline
- The Bulldogs have recorded five wins over San Diego. Their first win came in 1994 by the final score of 38-21 and their last win was a one-point victory in 2009, 25-24. Ken LaRose roamed the sideline in 1994 and
Jeff Voris was in his fourth season at the post in 2009.
- Butler Hall of Famer Arnold Mickens rushed for 263 yards on 47 carries vs. San Diego in 1994 to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
- Lou Andreadis set a BU school record against San Diego on Nov. 4, 1995 by returning eight kickoffs vs. the Toreros. In 2002, Justin Campbell was responsible for a school record 243 kickoff return yards vs. SD.
- The largest margin of victory for Butler over San Diego came in 1996 when the 'Dawgs dominated the action en route to a 34-3 win at home. Jesse Wilson returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a TD in that game. Naim Sanders rushed for 150 yards and two TD's. QB Eli Stoddard threw for 151 yards and 2 TD's.
- Butler defeated San Diego 29-27 in 1998. Ryan Zimpleman returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a BU touchdown. DeWayne Ewing threw two touchdown passes to Seth Morales and Naim Sanders would gain 109 yards on the ground while adding a TD. Ryan Galloy paced the defense with 12 tackles.
- Former Butler quarterback DeWayne Ewing threw for a school record 497 passing yards vs. San Diego on Oct. 21, 2000. Current BU offensive coordinator Kyle Conner also placed his name in the BU record book that day with 260 receiving yards.
- Butler won at San Diego for the first time in 2001, 19-16. DeWayne Ewing connected with Kyle Derickson for a 25-yard, fourth quarter touchdown. Ewing's other TD pass went to Adam Lafferty just before halftime.
- Butler defeated San Diego with a last second field goal in 2009, 25-24. David Lang split the uprights from 37-yards out to keep Butler undefeated at 5-0. Scott Gray rushed for 113 yards and a TD. Andrew Huck kept the chains moving with 260 passing yards and a score to Zach Watkins.
- Butler, San Diego, and Drake shared the Pioneer Football League title in 2012 with identical 7-1 conference records.
