@ButlerWLacrosse 2020 Preview Series: Midfield

The Butler women's lacrosse program returns 35 players from the 2019 roster. Of those returning, nearly half (14) are midfielders. This group of experienced players will be key in contributing on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs.

"We have several solid midfielders this season that should create a lot of depth," said head coach Cecil C. Pilson. "From our draw team to our offensive and defensive midfielders, we are excited to see them in action this weekend."

Efficient Dawgs
In 2019, Butler posted a .769 shots on goal percentage, compared to opponents .766. The Dawgs also posted five games with at least 10 goals, winning three of those contests.

Returning midfielders accounted for 51 of the Bulldogs 117 goals last season, meaning Butler's roster maintains nearly 50 percent of their scoring offense.

The midfield position also notched a combined 55 caused turnovers, helping Butler finish third overall in the BIG EAST in caused turnovers per game (9.71).

Returning to the Midfield
Of the 14 veteran midfielders, 10 saw significant minutes in the 2019 season. Sophomore Holly Hall helped lead the midfield offensive, posting 12 goals and 18 ground balls as a true freshman.

Senior captain Ashley Lizzi, juniors Ashley Steffes, Elizabeth Davide, and Katelyn Murphy, along with sophomores Lindsey Schreiber, Mary Heitkemper and Layla Tattersfield combined for 24 goals, 14 assists and 51 ground balls.

Seniors Taylor Lores and Taylor Kinn will also have a major impact for the Bulldogs. Junior Alayna Fuchs, together with sophomores Gabryelle Bodine and Ellie Eisenklam round out the veteran group.

The Newcomers
Along with a strong veteran group, the Bulldogs also brought on four freshmen who can add to the depth of the midfielder position. Abbie Glaser, Kaley Attaway, Anna Cate Gately and Emily Doell will all be available in their first-year campaigns.

Season Opener
The team opens the 2020 season at home against Hanover on Sunday, Feb. 16. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
