@ButlerUWSoccer Meets Marian Wednesday at Grand Park

GAME NOTES | LIVE STATS

The Bulldogs will host Marian University on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. Kick-off is slated for 11:30 a.m.
 
BULLDOGS BITS
 
  • Amanda Kowalski was named BIG EAST Defender of the Week (Feb. 9) after the Bulldog's 8-0 win at UIndy
  • Six different Dawgs scored in the season opener; Anja Savich and Gretchen Skoglund each had two scores apiece.
  • Stephanie Rodriguez was selected as the 2021 Preason BIGEAST Goalkeeper of the Year
  • Rodriguez, along with junior forward Katie Soderstrom and junior forward Anja Savich, were named to the Preaseason All-BIG EAST Team. With three honorees, Butler had the most representation of any leauge team.
  • Butler returns 9 of 11 starters from the 2019 season, including All-BIG EAST First Team selection Soderstrom, All-BIG EAST Second Team member Savich, and All-BIG EAST Freshman honoree Aliya Diagne
  • Rodriguez played every minute in goal for the Bulldogs in 2019.  Butler's defense posted nine shutouts (six in the BIG EAST) along with a 0.80 GAA on the 2019 season
  • The Bulldogs were represented on 9 of 11 BIG EAST Weekly Awards in 2019: three offensive, three defensive, two keeper, and five honor roll selections. 
 
RECAP: BUTLER VS. UINDY                                                              
The Bulldogs won in dominant fashion in their season opener, beating UIndy 8-0 last Tuesday. Butler held UIndy to just two shots on target, outshooting the Greyhounds by a 24-5 margin. Bulldog defender Amanda Kowalski earned BIG EAST Defender of the Week honors for her efforts on the back line, while adding a goal and an assist on the offensive side of the ball.
 
Forwards Anja Savich and Gretchen Skoglund notched three-point games, with two goals and one assist apiece. Maddie Farnsworth, Becky Dean, and Gabby Smith also tabbed goals in the win. Butler also posted a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
 
SCOUTING THE MARIAN KNIGHTS                                    
The Knights had an overall 14-1 record for the 2020 fall season. They went 8-1 in conference play and were the Crossroads League Regular Season and Tournament Champions. On Nov. 14 they defeated Grace University to clinch their second straight conference tournament championship. The Knights were also the 2019-20 NAIA Tournament Runner-Up. In the fall 2020 campaign Marian allowed only four goals in nine matches, and posted six shutouts. Offensively, the Knights averaged 4.67 goals a game in the fall.

BUTLER IN 2019                                                              
The Bulldogs ended the year at 10-5-4 overall and 5-2-2 in the BIG EAST to secure the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The post-season berth was the program's sixth tournament appearance in seven years as members of the BIG EAST and fifth consecutive. After a 1-1 draw with No. 6 seed Providence, Butler fell by way of penalty kicks (5-4) in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 3.

UP NEXT                                                                                          
Butler will host Dayton at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. on Feb. 21. BIG EAST play begins the following week as the Bulldogs will host DePaul in the Sellick Bowl on March 4 for their official home opener.
