@ButlerMSoccer Drops Season Opener to SIUE in Double Overtime

The Bulldogs dropped their season opener to SIUE Friday afternoon in a match that was moved to Grand Park's indoor facility in Westfield, Ind. The visiting Cougars came away with a 2-1 double-overtime decision.

It marked the first result of the season for both teams.

The Bulldogs out-shot SIUE, 19-9, but was unable to find the net after a goal in the 36th minute. That score included a beautiful combination between sophomores Hemi Nasser and Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. Nasser was able to find the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Butler was unable to convert on a pair of penalty kicks in the second half as the first attempt caught the post and SIUE keeper Tor Erik Larsen made a diving save on the second one.

After Butler controlled play for much of the first 45 minutes, the tides turned after halftime as the Cougars picked up the attack.

Seth Korenek found the net off a feed from Oskar Lenz in the 75th minute to knot the match.

The score would remain 1-1 through the end of regulation and the first overtime session. Less than a minute into the second overtime period, Butler was called for a foul just inside the box. Lenz stepped up and took the game with a successful penalty kick.

Cabrera, Jr., led the Bulldogs attack with eight shots, including four on goal.

Gabriel Gjergji made one save in his 101 minutes of work in goal for the Bulldogs. SIUE played a pair of keepers, who combined for six saves.
