The Bulldogs posted a second-place finish at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, as play concluded Tuesday.
The 36-hole event is hosted annually by Butler and named in honor of Don Benbow, the late Butler Athletics Hall of Famer who served the university for decades as an administrator and coach after a standout undergraduate playing career.
Butler shot 306 as a team on Tuesday, which was three shots off their first round performance. The Bulldogs stayed behind Drexel throughout the day Tuesday as the Dragons took the team title with rounds of 300 and 285. Their total of 585 was 24 shots better than second-place Butler.
The Bulldogs held off Evansville (612), who took third in the 10-team field.
Drexel's Angelo Giantsopolous finished at 141 (-1) after a second-round even par 71. He was two shots better than his teammate Alex Butler, who finished second.
Raymond Sullivan shot 75 Tuesday after a one-over 72 Monday on the 6,750-yard Jacksonville Beach Golf Club course. He finished in third.
Butler's
Michael Cascino tied for fourth at 148 (+6). He had the best round of the day Tuesday for the Bulldogs with a one-over 72.
Logan Sabins finished in a tie for 13
th at 154 (+12), followed by
Nick Williams (161; +19; tied for 36
th) and
Stephen Kocerha (162; +20; 39th).
Augie Hartnagel, playing as an individual, shot 170 and tied for 53rd.
The Benbow Invitational served as the Bulldogs' first competition in nearly a year due to the COVID pandemic. The Bulldogs return to action quickly with the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in North Carolina, beginning Friday.
