The Butler track and field team had impressive showings at both the Rick Erdmann Twilight at Eastern Kentucky and the Black and Gold Invite at Vanderbilt over the weekend, setting new school records and making moves on the NCAA performance lists.

Bulldogs Dominate the Rick Erdmann Twilight

Butler's 1,500-meter distance squad of freshman Jesse Hamlin, Simon Bedard, Euan Makepeace, and Matthew Wigelsworth re-wrote the record book on Saturday, becoming the nation's fastest group in the event.

Hamlin (3:38.87), Bedard (3:39.91) and Makepeace (3:40.23) all broke the previous school record, sweeping spots second through fourth, respectively. Hamlin's mark is one of the top collegiate 1,500-debut times in all of NCAA history. Wigelsworth (3:43.67) took ninth in the race, also moving into the top-10 all-time list.

Butler opened the weekend with stellar performances in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Friday's premiere night-session event at the meet.

Competing at his former school, Remi Schyns clocked an 8:40.57, which currently ranks fourth in the NCAA for the event and second in school history. Jonathan Besselink (8:41.63) and Clark Otte (8:45.98) moved to fifth and tenth on the national performance list.

On the women's side, Angelina Ellis was the lone Bulldog in the event, hitting a scorching 10:01.97 that was good for top-15 nationally, second all-time in school history, and third in the elite event.

On Saturday, in the women's 1,500-meter, Katherine Olsen and Corinna Pena set lifetime-bests with times of 4:24.13 and 4:26.39, respectively. Mia Beckham ran a personal-best of 16:28.92 in the 5,000-meter. All three times rank in the top-10 in program history.

Pierre-Louis Detourbe ran a personal-best14:06.15 in the men's 5,000-meter on Saturday to close out an outstanding day for the Butler squad.

Blue and White at the Black and Gold

At Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs continued to set personal bests across the board.

In the 3,000-meter, Butler picked up titles on both the men's and women's side. James Sweeney claimed the win for the men's race with a time of 8:17.98. Freshman Jack Wilson was third at 8:38.28.

Kami Hankins took gold in the 3,000-meter women's race with a mark of 9:36.53. Margo Hornocker (9:47.60) and Camille Hines (10:16.15) came in third and fourth in the event, as well.

Thomas Pitkin scored another individual event title for Butler in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.15. The Bulldog newcomer has now won two races in that event this season.

Chandler McGaha was third in the men's 800-meter with a personal best-time of 1:50.70. Also in the distance realm, Maddie McLain took third in the women's 5,000-meter with a time of 16:55.30.

Niki Ezeh picked up a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, just a few hundredths of a second off her all-time best mark.

In field events, Brendan Watkins swept second in both the horizontal jumps, hitting a 14.56m in the triple jump and a 6.99m in the long jump.

In just her second time throwing the javelin this season, Karmen Koch broke her own school record with a toss of 41.88m, good for second in the event.

Look Ahead
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will make appearances at two meets once again, with a majority of the squad heading to the Clark Wood Open at Louisville. Makepeace, Bedard and Barry Keane will travel to the invite-only Oregon Relays to compete in the elite men's 5,000-meter.
