Euan Makepeace,
Simon Bedard and
Barry Keane broke the previous Butler men's outdoor 5,000-meter record at the Oregon Relays late Friday night. The Butler trio finished fifth, sixth and seventh in the elite field as part of the invitational race at the meet.
Makepeace lead the Bulldog finishers with a time of 13:30.55, crushing his previous best from earlier this year by nearly 15 seconds. Bedard and Keane filed in right behind at 13:34.83 and 13:35.00, respectively.
All three Bulldogs move to the top of the BIG EAST in the event and jump to 10
th, 13

The prior record, set by Scott Overall in 2006, sat at 13:38.19. The 5,000-meter was the last remaining distance record that was outside of the direction of current head coach
Matt Roe. Every men's indoor and outdoor middle to long distance Butler record is now in his tenure.
All top-four finishers in the race, Oregon's Cole Hocker (13.19.98) and Cooper Teare (13:20.24), along with Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat (13:20.48) and Wesley Kiptoo (13:21.2), are recent NCAA champions.
Hocker most recently won three 2021 national indoor titles in the indoor mile, 3,000-meter, and distance medley relay. Teammate Teare is also a champ as part of the 2021 indoor distance medley relay team and was the runner-up to Hocker in the 3,000-meter. Kurgat won the 2019 Cross Country Championships and Kiptoo won the 2021 indoor 5,000-meter.
