INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler softball team never trailed in the rubber match of a three-game series with Seton Hall, winning on Sunday, 4-1. The Bulldogs (18-9, 6-2 BIG EAST) scored in the first, fourth, and fifth innings before conceding a single run to the Pirates (12-13, 4-5) in the seventh. The victory was number 264 for Coach
Scott Hall, making him the winningest coach in the history of Butler Softball.
How It Happened
- In the bottom of the first, Butler took a one-run lead when Ella White (1-2, RBI, 2B) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Ellie Boyer (1-3, RBI, R, BB, SB) to cross the plate.
- In the fourth, Boyer drew a bases-loaded walk and pushed Maddie Moore in for the second run.
- One inning later, after Kaylee Gross (1-1, R, SB) had singled and advanced to third, Monique Hoosen hit a two-run homer that put the Bulldogs up, 4-0.
- Seton Hall scored its only run of the day with a home run in the top of the seventh.
Butler Pitching
Alyssa Graves (7-3) started in the circle for Butler and picked up the win. She lasted 5.1 innings, allowing only two hits and three walks while striking out nine.
Karli Ricketts (1.2 IP, H, R, ER, 5 K) earned a save in relief.
Bulldog Bits
- Monique Hoosen's home run was her seventh of the season and the tenth of her career.
- The win today brings Coach Scott Hall (in his 12th season) to an overall record of 264-286-1, making him the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Butler softball program. Hall surpasses Barb Greenburg, who coached from 1981 through 1994. She was the program's first coach and attained a career record of 263-226-4.
- Butler has started conference play in 2022 by winning each of its first three series (Villanova, 2-0, DePaul, 2-1, Seton Hall, 2-1). Since joining the BIG EAST in 2014, the Bulldogs' previous best start was 2016 when the team won its first two series and split the third.
