MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Butler softball team opened day two at the Blues City Classic with a 7-1 loss to Indiana State but rebounded with a 4-2 win over Iowa. The Bulldogs (11-7) had already given up seven runs to the Sycamores (10-6) when they scored their only run in the fifth inning. In the second contest, Butler built a 4-0 lead through four innings and then held the Hawkeyes (11-5) to only two runs to finish out the game.
Game 1: Butler- 1, Indiana State- 7 (7 innings)
Indiana State took an early, 1-0, lead in the first and used a huge fourth inning to build a 7-0 lead. In the top of the fifth,
Lauren Fey (2-4, RBI) singled and
Zoe Herdman crossed the plate, giving the Bulldogs their only run.
Teagan O'Rilley (2-3) added a pair of hits for Butler.
Mackenzie Griman (2-3) started in the circle for Butler, throwing 3.1 innings and taking the loss. She allowed eight hits and five runs (all earned) along with two walks while striking out five.
Madison Seigworth (2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K) provided relief from the bullpen.
Game 2: Iowa- 2, Butler- 4 (7 innings)
In the bottom of the third inning,
Bri Avery (1-2, R) singled, and, after stealing third, scored on an error. In the same inning,
Ella White and
Lauren Fey (1-2, R) took advantage of a second Hawkeyes throwing error and put the Bulldogs up, 3-0. In the fourth,
Monique Hoosen (1-2, RBI, R, HR) knocked a solo home run to extend the lead to 4-0. Iowa scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the Butler lead in half.
Karli Ricketts (7-1) started for Butler and held Iowa hitless through four innings. She pitched 6.0 innings and earned the win, allowing three hits, two runs (both earned), and two walks, while striking out five.
Alyssa Graves (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 2 K) picked up the save.
Bulldog Bits
- Monique Hoosen's home run was her third of the season and the sixth of her career.
- With a career total of 451.2 innings pitched, Alyssa Graves has now moved into the eighth spot on Butler's all-time list, surpassing Breanna Fisher (2009-2012).
- Karli Ricketts now has 370 career strikeouts from the pitcher's circle and has moved into the sixth position on Butler's all-time list.
- Butler's last win over a Big Ten opponent was a 4-0 victory over Iowa on February 16, 2018.
