INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler softball team took the first game of three with BIG EAST leading UConn, winning, 6-2, on Friday afternoon. The Huskies (18-13, 8-2 BIG EAST) threatened in the first but could not put one across, and the Bulldogs (19-10, 7-2 BIG EAST) scored all six of their runs in the first two innings, never trailing.
How It Happened
- UConn drew three straight walks in the first inning to load the bases with nobody out. Butler was forced into a quick pitching change but then struck out the side.
- In the bottom of the first, Lauren Fey scored from third on a Huskies error, and, later, Monique Hoosen blasted a three-run home run which also scored Mackenzie Griman (1-3, 2 RBI, R, 2B) and Ellie Boyer (1-2, 2R, SB). Butler led, 4-0, after one.
- In the second, Butler added two more runs when Ella White hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Bri Avery, and Griman hit a run-scoring double, pushing Boyer across. UConn made a pitching change, as the Bulldogs were now up, 6-0.
- UConn plated two in the sixth to pull to within four, but that was all the scoring.
Butler Pitching
Alyssa Graves (3 BB) started in the circle for Butler and was relieved by
Karli Ricketts in the first inning. Ricketts (9-2) earned the win, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing three hits, two runs (both earned), and one walk while striking out ten.
Bulldog Bits
- Monique Hoosen's home run was her eighth of the season as she joins five other Bulldogs in the seventh spot on Butler's all-time list for home runs in one season. She has 11 for her career.
- Maddie Moore was the only Bulldog to manage two hits on the day.
- Bri Avery's stolen base was her 13th of the season and the 33rd of her career. The stolen base for Ellie Boyer was her eighth of the season.
- The win for Karli Ricketts was the 28th of her career, putting her into a tie for ninth on Butler's all-time list (Breanna Fisher, '09-'12).
