WASHINGTON D.C. – The Butler softball team won game one of a three-game BIG EAST series at Georgetown by the final score of 6-4. After the Hoyas (10-24, 1-12 BIG EAST) took an early 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs (18-21, 7-9 BIG EAST) built a five-run lead with three runs each in the second and fourth innings. Georgetown had a three-run home run in the fifth, but it was not enough.
Game 1: Butler 6, Georgetown 4 (7 innings)
Georgetown struck first, putting one run on the board in the first inning.
In the top of the second,
Paige Dorsett and
Kieli Ryan each reached base.
Monique Hoosen then cleared the bases with a three-run home run, giving the Dawgs a 3-1 lead.
Two innings later, Butler increased its lead. With runners on second and third, a
Hailey Conger single pushed Hoosen home. Then, on a double steal,
Cate Lehner reached the plate. Finally, Dorsett singled in Conger. The Bulldogs were up, 6-1, in the middle of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Georgetown connected on a three-run home run, reducing the lead to 6-4. Butler replaced starter
Katie Petran in the circle with
Rylyn Dyer.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hoyas advanced runners to first and second with one out, but the next two batters were retired.
Katie Petran (12-4) started in the circle for Butler and earned her twelfth win of the season. In 4.0 innings of work, she allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks, striking out four.
Rylyn Dyer (3.0IP, 4H, 5K) entered in the fifth with the Dawgs up, 6-4. She pitched three scoreless innings and was credited with a save.
