Butler Drops Midweek at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Butler fell to the Bellarmine Knights 17-10 on Tuesday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. With the loss, Butler slides to 4-12 on the year, and Bellarmine improves to 4-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bellarmine struck first in the bottom of the first frame, scratching across one run on two hits.
  • Butler responded in the top of the second as Moore scored off an RBI double from Thaxton, evening the score at 1-1 as the two sides headed to the bottom of the second. The Knights were able to put two runners on in the bottom of the frame, but were unable to bring either home as the score stayed even heading to the third.
  • Rhoades hit a leadoff double to start the third. In the ensuing at bat, Gilmore doubled down the left field line, scoring Rhoades, which gave BU the 2-1 advantage with no outs. An RBI single from Moore scored another for the Dawgs as BU took the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third.
  • After a scoreless bottom half from the home side, the Butler offense exploded in the top of the fourth. It started with a walk, a double and another walk as BU had the bases loaded with no outs as the Knights headed to the bullpen. Rhoades was hit by a pitch, which brought a run home for the Dawgs. After a pitching change from Bellarmine, a sac fly and back-to-back singles scored three for BU. Butler took the 7-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth. The Knights responded with a big inning of their own, plating five runs on four hits to cut the deficit to one (7-6).
  • After a scoreless top of the sixth for BU, the Knights belted a two-run blast in the bottom half of the frame, giving the home side the lead at 8-7. Bellarmine was able to tack on two more runs before the end of the frame as BU trailed 10-7 heading into the seventh.
  • Bellarmine tacked on two more in the seventh, giving the home side the 12-7 advantage going into the eighth. The Dawgs were able to get one back in the top of the frame but a five-run inning from the Knights gave the home side the 17-8 advantage heading into the ninth.
  • Despite adding two runs in the ninth, Butler was unable to mount a comeback, dropping the contest 17-10.
