Football - Davidson Celebration 2016

Football John Dedman

@ButlerUFootball Knocks Off Davidson, 20-17, in Final Seconds

Box Score
Freshman Drew Bevelhimer's 29-yard field goal at the end of regulation gave Butler a 20-17 come-from-behind win over Davidson Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15) in North Carolina. The Bulldogs are now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Pioneer Football League play. Davidson falls to 2-5 (0-4 PFL).

Bevelhimer's heroics were set up by a Zach LaRoche interception with the pick coming on the goalline. Davidson had driven all the way to the Bulldogs' nine with the tie scored at 17 before LaRoche's takeaway. He returned it to the 20 and handed the ball to the Butler offense with 2:31 to play.

Malcolm Weaver orchestrated the winning drive, including converting a 4th and 3 at the Davidson 31 with 44 seconds to play. That 17-yard connection to Pace Temple put Butler in position for the win.

Butler found itself in an early hole. On Davidson's first play from scrimmage, Stockton McGuire found Cam Cheuvront for a 74-yard touchdown connection. McGuire then connected with Nick Nolting from eight yards out for a 14-0 lead with 10:16 remaining in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs cut the lead in half as Will Marty had a 25-yard touchdown strike to Danny Cotter with just under six minutes remaining in the half. The teams would take that 14-7 Davidson advantage to the locker room.

Weaver came in at quarterback in the second half and provided an immediate spark. He broke free for a 90-yard touchdown run on his third snap. Davidson had pinned the Bulldogs on their own 2 with a punt before Weaver found the endzone to tie the score.

The teams traded field goals for a 17-17 game midway through the fourth quarter prior to Bevelhimer's game-winner.

Weaver went 7-of-11 through the air for 64 yards to go along with his 110 rushing yards in 30 minutes of action. Duvante Lane had 59 yards rushing.

Butler's defense limited Davidson to 132 rushing yards. Ethan Brunhofer led the Bulldogs with nine tackles.

For the host Wildcats, McGuire threw for 273 yards.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Butler Bowl, hosting Dayton at 1 p.m. It's also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. ButlerSports.com will have a live video stream of the game.
