INDIANAPOLIS- Butler defeated the Blue Jays of Creighton 2-0 in a conference matchup on a rainy Thursday evening. The win gives the 'Dawgs a crucial three points in the conference and moves their overall record to 10-5-2 and conference record to 3-3-1.
Â
Co-Head Coach Tari St. John praised the team's performance against a tough opponent. "Creighton has vastly improved and are tremendously organized. We stayed on the front foot and we attacked for the entire 90 minutes and we didn't just settle for that early penalty kick." St. John added, "It was an important win as we are vying for a spot in the conference tournament."
Â
The Bulldogs saw offensive success early when a foul on Creighton inside the box led to a Serina Kashimoto penalty kick. Kashimoto delivered on the attempt and put BU up 1-0 before the match hit the 10 minute mark. The goal would be Kashimoto's ninth of the season.
Â
St. John also commented on Kashimoto's impact on the program. "She's going to leave quite the legacy. Her on and off the field actions, her leadership, her work ethic, the example that she set, there's just so many things that she is giving to this program that we are very grateful for."
Â
The second half saw a similar result for the 'Dawgs. Paige Monaghan fired a shot at just over 67 minutes into the match and beat the keeper to the right side of the net to give Butler a 2-0 lead. The goal is Monaghan's fourth of the season and credit for the assist would go to both Kyra Cooke and Brenna Pawelkowski.
Â
The defense for BU was spectacular in the shutout. Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Shannon McDevitt and the Bulldogs defense held Creighton to only nine shots during the 90 minutes. Keeper Hannah Luedtke played the full match and accounted for three saves.
Â
The conference match saw six different 'Dawgs take shots on the Blue Jays. Butler finished with 19 shots, 10 in the first period and nine in the second.
Â
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on Marquette. The conference matchup will get underway at 2PM. Â
