WEDNESDAY MATINEE: Butler makes the quick trip to Chicago for a Wednesday afternoon match-up with DePaul. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (Central, Noon Eastern/Indianapolis). The Bulldogs are 4-2 in BIG EAST play (9-4-1 overall) and are ranked No. 15 nationally. DePaul is 2-4 in conference play and 7-6-2 overall. Â The match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports Go app.
CLIMBING: The Bulldogs jumped to No. 15 (from No. 19) in this week's NSCAA national poll. Butler has climbed as high as No. 7 in that poll this season. This week, the Bulldogs also come in at No. 19 in the College Soccer News and No. 20 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings.
BACK TO THEIR WINNING WAYS: Butler stopped a three-match losing streak by beating Seton Hall, 1-0, Saturday night in Indianapolis. Junior Eric Leonard scored his first goal of the season as his tally in the 22nd minute proved to be the game-winner. Eric Dick and the defense registered Butler's fifth shutout of the season. Butler enjoyed a 14-8 shot advantage in the match.
EFFICIENCY: Butler registered 14 shots in Saturday's win over Seton Hall with nine of those coming on goal. Senior David Goldsmith led the team with five shots. As a team, Butler ranks 11th nationally in both shots per game (15.64) and shots on goal per game (6.79). The Bulldogs lead the BIG EAST in shots on goal, and trail only Creighton in the league in total shots. Individually, Goldsmith leads the BIG EAST in both categories and is among the national leaders with 4.36 shots per game (eighth nationally) and 2.07 shots on goal per game (seventh nationally).
DIFFERENT APPROACH, SIMILAR RESULT: Saturday's win over Seton Hall featured one goal by the Bulldogs, and was the first time this season that Butler won while scoring only one goal. It was only the second time this season that Butler had scored one goal in a match (a 2-1 loss to St. John's in the previous match). Eight of Butler's nine wins have come by scoring two or more goals as the Bulldogs are 8-1 in matches where they find the net at least once.
HIGH OCTANE OFFENSE: Butler has scored multiple goals in nine of the team's 14 matches, averaging an impressive 2.07 goals per game. That mark is ninth nationally and leads the BIG EAST. Factoring in goals and assists, Butler averages 6.29 points per game, which is seventh in the NCAA.
AGAINST THE BLUE DEMONS:Â The BIG EAST rivals will meet for just the eighth time in series history. Butler owns a 4-1-2 record against DePaul. In the three match-ups since Butler joined the BIG EAST, the teams have a 1-1-1 record, including a Butler 2-0 win at home in 2013, a 0-0 tie in Chicago in 2014, and a 1-0 DePaul win in Indianapolis in 2015. In the contest last season, Butler had a 20-5 advantage in shots, but the Blue Demons' Jake Scheper scored in the eighth minute and the goal held up.
QUALITY COMPETITION: Butler is ranked No. 16 in this week's NCAA RPI metrics. Butler and Louisville (No. 3) tied in the season opener. The Bulldogs have wins over six Top 100 teams: Villanova (29), Providence (39), Georgetown (55), UC Santa Barbara (87), Evansville (92), and SIUE (93). Seven of the 10 BIG EAST schools are ranked in the Top 81 of the RPI.
Three of Butler's four losses have come at the feet of teams ranked in the Top 30 of the RPI: Denver (14), Creighton (21) and Indiana (30). Those three teams, along with Louisville, are ranked in the Top 20 of the NSCAA national poll this week.
ALL LEAGUE, ALL THE TIME: The Bulldogs have three regular season match-ups remaining with all coming against conference foes. Teams are maneuvering for one of six spots in the BIG EAST Tournament as well as the ability to host matches as the higher seeds. Butler, at 4-2 (12 points), is currently tied for second in the BIG EAST standings with Providence, but the Bulldogs own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Friars thanks to a 2-0 victory earlier this season. Creighton (4-1-1, 13 points) leads the BIG EAST. Of the teams currently positioned in spots 1-6, the Bulldogs have faced all of them with the exception of Xavier. Butler finished its non-conference schedule with an impressive 5-2-1 mark.
THESE GUYS ARE TOP DRAWER: Top Drawer Soccer released its Midseason Top 100 Player Rankings this week. Senior David Goldsmith comes in at No. 10 on the list. Freshman Lewis Suddick was ranked No. 13 on the Freshman Top 100 List.
CLASS ACT: David Goldsmith has been selected as a Senior Class Award candidate for the 2016 season. A total of 60 NCAA men's and women's soccer student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
FINDING THE NET: Senior David Goldsmith has 10 goals on the season. His 10 goals and 0.71 goals per game are 12th in the NCAA. His 23 points and 1.64 points per game are both in the top 20 in the country. He leads the BIG EAST in all categories except for points per game, where he is second. All 10 goals for Goldsmith came in a seven-match segment of the season between Sept. 9 and Oct. 1. He scored in six of those seven matches. He did not score in the first three matches of the season, and has not found the net in the team's last four contests.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE: Goalkeeper Eric Dick has orchestrated shutouts in five of Butler's matches thus far this season, posting a 1.12 goals against average. He has 47 saves on the season, highlighted by nine saves at Indiana, which was just off the 10 saves he registered in the regular season opener at Louisville. Dick also turned away a penalty kick at IU.
FIRSTS: Sophomore Jared Timmer converted a penalty kick against Providence, his first goal in a Butler uniform. He added another goal at Indiana…redshirt junior Tanner Witsken assisted on David Goldsmith's game-winner at Villanova in the BIG EAST opener; it was the first point of Witsken's Butler career…Derek Sutton got the first start of his Butler career against Georgetown…A.R. Smith got the start Saturday against Seton Hall. It was his first start of the season. He became the 15th Bulldog to start a match this season.
