With just seconds remaining on the clock in double overtime, DePaul's Zach El-Shafei put home a rebound off a saved free kick to give the host Blue Demons a 1-0 win in Chicago Wednesday afternoon. DePaul improves to 8-6-2 overall and 3-4 in BIG EAST play. Butler is now 9-5-1 (4-3).
Â
DePaul's best offensive chances were bookended almost 110 minutes apart.
Â
DePaul had an early chance just 75 seconds into the match as a ball got loose in front of Butler keeper
Eric Dick in the box. Simon Megally, the Blue Demons' leading scorer, had the ball at his feet with Dick crowding him, and the ensuing shot was not on net.
Â
With 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime, the Bulldogs were called for a handball about 23 yards from their own net. The clock was stopped as the ball was corralled for the DePaul free kick. The shot to the bottom right hand corner was saved by Dick, but the rebound rolled to the feet of El-Shafei, who scored the game-winner.
Â
The Bulldogs controlled play for much of the match after an opening flurry from the Blue Demons that included three shots and several corner kicks in the opening minutes. Half of Butler's 16 shots during regulation were on goal, which forced DePaul's Quentin Low into eight saves.
Â
Ninety seconds into the first overtime,
Michael Peay found
David Goldsmith with a pass in front of the goal, but the shot was sent wide right. It was Peay who provided the Bulldogs' best opportunity in the second overtime as well, crossing a pass to
Joe Moulden with three minutes to play. The ensuing shot went high.
Â
The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 15 nationally this week, out-shot DePaul, 19-8. Goldsmith and
Lewis Suddick led Butler with five shots each. Dick made three saves on the afternoon.
Â
The match was delayed almost 90 minutes due to lightning. The original start time of 11 a.m. Central was set to allow for Chicagoland school children to attend the match.
Â
As the regular season winds down, Butler is in the midst of its busiest portion of BIG EAST play. Beginning with Saturday's win over Seton Hall, the Bulldogs are in a four-match stretch that spans only 12 days. Butler returns to play Saturday night, hosting Marquette at the Butler Bowl. The 7 p.m. also doubles as Senior Night as the team's seniors will be recognized prior to the match. The Bulldogs conclude the regular season at Xavier on Thursday, Nov. 3. All remaining matches will be streamed live through the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports Go app.
