On The Line
In the latest BIG EAST standings, the Bulldogs sit in seventh place with 10 points. One spot ahead of them is the Creighton Bluejays with 12 points. With a Butler win and a Creighton loss on Friday night, the Bulldogs can clinch the sixth and final spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. BU travels to face Xavier, a team they have won four-straight games against, and Creighton hosts the #10 Georgetown Hoyas, who are hoping to gain a bye in the first-round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Teams earn three points for each conference win and one point for a tie.
Tournament Format
The BIG EAST Women's Soccer Tournament is comprised of the top six teams, with the top two earning byes directly into the semifinals. The four seed plays the five seed while the three seed takes on the six seed in the two quarterfinal matchups, both of which are played on the campus of the higher seed. The tournament then moves to Washington D.C. where the semifinal and final rounds will be played on the campus of Georgetown. If the Bulldogs are able to clinch a spot in the tournament, the three-seeded opponent that awaits them will be decided Friday night. Outside of DePaul and St. Johns, Butler has a chance to play the remaining three teams in the field, pending the results of Friday night's matches.
Score First
The Bulldogs are undefeated this season when they score the first goal of the contest.
Ready... Aim... Fire!
Paige Monaghan and
Serina Kashimoto are responsible for half of Butler's shots on the year. Monaghan has taken 66 shots, 12 more than Kashimoto. The duo ranks one and three, respectively, in the BIG EAST in shots per game.
Kashimoto Approaching History
Serina Kashimoto leads the team in points (24) goals (9) and assists (6). The 2015 Second Team All-American is currently tied for eighth all-time with 17 career assists. She is just three points shy of 10th place in points.
Luedtke Eyes Record
Hannah Luedtke is on pace to crack the top-five of the Butler record book with a 0.90 single-season goals against average. She currently ranks fifth on the list, edging teammate
Madison Card who posted a 0.96 average during the 2015 season. Luedtke has stopped 64 shots this year in almost 1,500 minutes in net for the 'Dawgs.
Postseason Update
Five of six slots are taken up in the BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship field. With Sunday's win at then-No. 7/2 Georgetown, DePaul locked up at least a share of the regular-season title, a No. 1 or 2 seed in the conference postseason and its accompanying first-round bye. Joining the Blue Demons in the field are the Hoyas, Marquette, Providence and St. John's. The final spot comes down to Butler or Creighton, with the Bluejays currently owning a two-point advantage over the Bulldogs in the standings, but Butler owning the head-to-head win over Creighton in the event of a tie in points.
High-Low
No seeds have been solidified as we head into the final game of the regular season, with DePaul having the most-narrow of options for a qualified team as either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed. The Blue Demons' foe on Friday, RV/- Marquette, could jump as high as No. 1, or fall as low as No. 4, and all seeds in between, meaning the Golden Eagles are either getting a bye directly into the semifinals or hosting a first round game next Tuesday. Similar outcomes await Georgetown, which can rise as high as No. 2 and earn a bye, or tumble to No. 4 and host on Tuesday. Providence's range is between seeds 2 and 5, St. John's is between Nos. 3 and 6, Creighton could be either No. 5 or No. 6, and Butler could only be the No. 6 seed.
Friday Matchups
All five regular-season finales will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN), beginning with Seton Hall at Villanova at 2:30 p.m. (ET). Butler visits Xavier at 6:30 p.m., with the Bulldogs needing a win in order to remain in contention for the final slot in the BIG EAST Championship field. Providence visits St. John's at 7 p.m., with a win for the Friars guaranteeing either a first-round home game or a bye, and a Red Storm win means a first-round home game. No. 10/7 Georgetown travels to Creighton at 8 p.m., with the Bluejays needing a win to guarantee a spot in the field or banking on Butler to trip up at Xavier, and the Hoyas needing at least a point to keep a first-round bye in the picture. DePaul and RV/Marquette meet in Milwaukee (8 p.m.) for what is practically the regular-season title game, with the Blue Demons having the crown all to themselves with a win or draw, and the Golden Eagles earning a share with a win.
