@ButlerUFootball Hosts Morehead State Saturday for Senior Day

Full Notes (PDF)

ONE MORE AT THE BOWL: Butler, winners of two of its last three contests, hosts Morehead State Saturday afternoon at the Butler Bowl. The 1 p.m. kick-off is the final home game for Butler's senior class. Butler is now 4-5 overall on the season and 2-4 in Pioneer League Football play. The Eagles enter with a 2-6 overall mark, but are 1-4 in league play.

HOW TO WATCH: In partnership with Butler's College of Communication, a live stream will be available on ButlerSports.com. Mark Minner will handle the play-by-play. Live stats will also be available.

SENIOR SEND-OFF: Saturday's contest will be the final home game in a Butler uniform for 15 seniors, who will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony. The seniors include:

QB Malcolm Weaver
OL Tom Brown, Michael Demos, Joe Hackett, Nestor Porres, Brad Weber, and Michael Robinson
WR Danny Cotter
K/P Ian Dobek
DT Jordan Ransone and Ellis Cupit
LB Sean Horan and David Starkey
DB Adam Chappelle and Zach LaRoche

LAST TIME OUT: Butler secured the Hoosier Helmet Trophy Saturday, downing in-state rival Valparaiso on the road. A Duvante Lane touchdown from three yards out would put the 'Dawgs up 20-12 in the fourth quarter and a late field goal by Drew Bevelhimer would secure the win for BU, 23-12. Butler has now won nine of the 11 match-ups with the Hoosier Helmet Trophy on the line since that element was added to the series in 2006, Jeff Voris's first season as Butler's head coach.

ONE YEAR AGO: Morehead State defeated Butler, 34-21, in the 2015 match-up between the teams in Kentucky. Butler's Matt Shiltz was spectacular for the Bulldog offense, accounting for 401 yards of total offense. Then freshman Pace Temple recorded three receptions for 34 yards and a score. Morehead State amassed three touchdowns through the air, connecting with three different receivers.

THE SERIES: Morehead State owns a 13-6 advantage in the all-time series with Butler. The series has been much closer over the past decade after Morehead State joined the Pioneer Football League. Jeff Voris is 5-5 in 10 career match-ups with the Eagles. The first meeting between the teams was in 1963, with Morehead State taking a 31-13 win. Tony Hinkle was the football coach at Butler.

ON THE GROUND: In Saturday's win over Valparaiso, the Bulldogs enjoyed a 275-33 advantage in rushing yards. Butler's 48 rushing attempts and 275 rushing yards were both season-highs for the Bulldogs. The Butler defense limited Valparaiso's offense to a season-low rushing total for a Butler opponent this season.

HEAD OF STEAM: A majority of that rushing total was gained by Duvante Lane, who had career-highs of 156 yards on 29 carries. It was his second 100-yard performance of the season after he gained 104 yards on only 12 carries against Taylor in the second game of the season.

Lane's 580 rushing yards are fourth in the PFL. His 4.9 yards per carry ranks fifth.

KEEPING THE PACE: Butler had 171 yards pacing at Valparaiso, and sophomore Pace Temple was on the receiving end of 125 of them. His yardage came on only five receptions. Temple has 864 yards receiving this season, which is the best mark in the PFL and is ninth nationally. His 96.0 yards per game average is second in the conference. The 125 yards were just off his career-high 128 yards receiving against Campbell, and also put him over 1,000 yards in his Butler career.

ATTEMPT, BUT NO POINT AFTER: Against Valparaiso, Butler blocked both PAT attempts by the Crusaders, as Curt Beckman and Chad Burdo each got hands on those kicks. The Bulldogs have blocked six kicks this season, which leads the PFL and is third nationally.

UP NEXT: Following the Saturday afternoon match against Morehead State, the Bulldogs will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for their final game of the 2016 season. Butler will take on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m.

DOWN THE ROAD: North Dakota State University and the Minnesota Twins announced on Monday that the NDSU football team will host Butler University at Target Field in Minneapolis on August 31, 2019. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. The game is a home game for NDSU, which had been in discussions with the Minnesota Twins about moving an upcoming home game to Target Field. The game will be the first Division I football game played at Target Field.

LOSING A CAPTAIN: Butler's game against Dayton included a sizable delay as senior defensive tackle and one of three captains on the roster Jordan Ransone was carted off the field and taken to a local hospital with a severe leg injury. He will miss the remainder of the season. Ransone had accounted for a team-high 5.5 sacks this season.

LEAGUE HONOR: For the second time this season, freshman kicker Drew Bevelhimer earned PFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors. This week, he shared the award. He went 3-of-3 on field goals Saturday at Valparaiso. Earlier this season, he earned the PFL honor with his game-winning kick at Davidson. On the season, he is 12-of-14 on field goals.

FLIPPING THE FIELD: Senior Ian Dobek is second in the PFL, averaging 40.0 yards per punt. In the Marist game, he also placed four of his five punts inside the 20. The Bulldogs are netting 39.5 yards per punt thanks to tremendous coverage that has allowed a total of eight net return yards this season on 40 total punts. Butler is allowing an average of 1.0 total punt return yards per game, which is third in FCS.

In contrast, Butler's Isaak Newhouse is averaging 12.7 yards per punt return this season. That average is second in the PFL and 17th nationally.
