Box Score DeShawn Jones's 25-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted Campbell to a 33-27 win over Butler in the Pioneer Football League opener for both schools. The Fighting Camels improve to 3-1 on the season, while Butler falls to 2-2.
Â
Campbell held the lead until a
Drew Bevelhimer 22-yard field goal tied the game at 20 with 13:39 to play. Campbell would quickly answer with a Jared Joyner touchdown to retake a 27-20 advantage.
Â
With 4:10 remaining on the clock, Butler would use some trickery as running back
Sam Schrader passed the ball to
Malcolm Weaver for a 3-yard touchdown, knotting the game at 27.
Â
The teams would trade punts before
Ethan Brunhofer intercepted an Elijah Burress pass at the Butler 35 with 30 seconds remaining. The turnover not only stopped the Campbell drive; it gave the Bulldogs an opportunity to win. Weaver and
Pace Temple connected twice for a total of 32 yards, which set up a 50-yard field goal attempt at the end of regulation. The kick was no good and the teams went to the extra session.
Â
Three incomplete passes and a holding call that negated a 15-yard scamper by Weaver meant that Butler was unable to convert any points in overtime. Campbell then got their turn from the 25 and Jones found the endzone on the first play from scrimmage.
Â
Campbell had a slight 394-359 advantage in total yards, with 248 of those yards coming on the ground. Saturday's match-up brought together the PFL's top two ranked offenses entering league play. The Bulldogs had a slight edge in both time of possession (32:12 to 27:48) and first downs (24-21).
Â
Weaver threw for 194 yards and ran for 35. He had a rushing touchdown and had the three-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Temple had a career-high 128 yards on six receptions.
Duvante Lane led Butler's ground attack with 75 yards and one touchdown.
Â
Jones had 174 yards rushing for Campbell. He and Joyner each had two touchdowns.
Â
In addition to his interception, Brunhofer led Butler with 10 tackles.
Sean Horan and
Zach LaRoche each had nine.
Dylan Banks had a sack for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Bulldogs return to the Butler Bowl Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting San Diego in a PFL contest. The 1 p.m. game will be streamed live on ButlerSports.com.
