QUEENS, N.Y.- The Bulldogs battled the Red Storm Thursday night and after 110 minutes of play the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The scoreless decision moves the BU streak of games without giving up a goal to six in a row, and puts the Butler record at 8-2-2.
"The game was as tight as we thought it would be," Co-Head Coach
Tari St. John stated after the match. "St. John's is a top quality team that are incredibly well coached and organized. We knew we would have to be patient to break them down and felt we had our best period of the game in the second OT when we carved out a few good scoring chances."
Â
Paige Monaghan,
Serina Kashimoto and
Halle Stelbasky were all effective on the offensive side of the ball. Monaghan finished with a game-high six shots against St. Johns, with two on goal. Kashimoto added four shots, with two on goal and Stelbasky contributed three shots, with one on goal.
Â
Hannah Luedtke was solid once again in goal. The goalkeeper finished the shutout playing all 110 minutes with seven saves. Luedtke's save total fell one short of her season-high of eight in a match.
Â
The Bulldog offense got off to a quick start in the first half with Monaghan getting a shot off at the 1:09 mark. The forward quickly followed with a second shot that went wide just before the 15th minute. Stelbasky took two of her three shots in the first half, attempting a fierce header a little over halfway into the match. Luedtke was also impressive with three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Â
The second half also got off to a quick start with Stelbasky getting a shot off a minute and a half into play. Kashimoto then got going when she took her first shot of the evening that was stopped by the St. Johns keeper. The period saw the highest amount of offense from both teams on the evening, with Butler taking six shots as a team and St. Johns taking eight.
Â
90 minutes of play was not enough to end the conference matchup, so the game headed to extra time. In the first 10 minutes the 'Dawgs only got one shot off when Monaghan fired on goal but was unfortunately blocked. Luedtke and the defense saw the Red Storm finish the first extra period with five shots.
Â
The last 10 minutes of play featured a flurry of BU offense. Monaghan, Kashimoto and
Maria Collica all attempted game winners, but to no avail. The BU defense kept everything calm though, with St Johns not having a single shot in the final period.
"Overall I think a tie was probably a fair result after a hard fought game by both teams," St. John added. "We certainly have some areas we need to address and improve upon, but I'm really proud of our group for their work rate and effort tonight."
Â
The Bulldogs will return to conference action on Sunday against Providence. The 'Dawgs will take on the Friars in the Butler Bowl starting at 1PM.Â
