Butler picked up its second straight Pioneer Football League win, taking down Jacksonville, 37-22, Saturday afternoon at the Sellick Bowl.
With the win, the Bulldogs are now 2-2 in PFL play and 4-3 overall. Jacksonville suffers its first PFL loss of the season (2-1) and is 4-2 on the year.
Butler's
Sam Schrader got the home team on the scoreboard first with a one-yard touchdown run with 6:04 remaining in the first quarter. The score came on fourth down as coach
Jeff Voris decided to go for it. Jacksonville answered with a pair of touchdowns to take a 15-7 lead with 8:28 to play in the first half.
The next 23 points belonged to the Bulldogs, taking a commanding 30-15 lead midway through the third quarter.
Schrader had three rushing touchdowns on the afternoon, registering 74 yards on 10 carries. He also had a 41-yard pass to
Brad Sznajder that set up Butler's first score of the day.
Butler had 232 yards rushing, just 10 yards shy of Jacksonville's total despite 10 fewer carries. The Dolphins entered the contest leading the PFL in both scoring (39.6 points per game) and rushing yards (318 per game). Butler's defense held them far under those totals.
Butler won the battle of time of possession (31:04) and had 25 first downs to 22 by Jacksonville. Senior
Duvante Lane was a big part of that with 98 yards rushing and a touchdown as Butler's offensive line opened holes throughout the day.
Will Marty connected on 19 of his 23 attempts. He and
Pace Temple paired up for 94 yards and a touchdown late in the first half that gave the Bulldogs a 20-15 lead at the break. Fifty-two of Temple's yards came on that drive.
Mason Brunner led the Butler defense with 15 tackles.
Isaak Newhouse had 13 stops, including 10 solo tackles.
Mike Cerone and
Ethan Brunhofer each had eight tackles.
Looking for one last rally in the fourth quarter, Jacksonville's drive was thwarted on fourth down as Butler cornerback
Ryan Bradley broke up a pass attempt in the endzone to give Butler the ball back with 4:10 to play. The Bulldogs were able to run out the clock.
Lamar Washington and Rylan Wells each had 63 yards rushing for the Dolphins. Wells also had 140 yards passing.
The Bulldogs continue a two-game homestand next Saturday, hosting Campbell at 1 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend on the Butler campus.
