Butler returned to its winning ways Tuesday night, posting a 1-0 win over Evansville at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. With the result, both teams are now 4-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs got out to strong start, taking the first seven shots of the match and controlling possession for much of the first half. That included the first goal of freshman
Joel Harvey's Butler career. He,
Eric Leonard and
Brandon Guhl connected on a series of quick passes that ended up with Harvey 1v1 with Evansville keeper Frederik Reimer from eight yards out. Harvey's goal came in the 12
th minute.
Senior keeper
Eric Dick made four saves in the shutout win, including a diving stop in the 90
th minute to preserve the clean sheet. Evansville's Ian McGrath fired a shot toward the upper 90 from 15 yards out through traffic that Dick was able to punch away.
With six minutes to play, Dick came out to address a high-bouncing ball. Outside the box, he was forced to head it, and it ended up on the foot of UE's Arlick Ntabana, who pushed a shot just left of the post of an exposed goal.
This was the 21
st solo shutout of Dick's career.
Butler had 19 shots in the match, including eight on net. Reimer was able to turn away seven of those.
Isaac Galliford had a team-best four shots.
Butler had several chances, but could not convert on an insurance goal in the second half, relying on Dick's play to post the win.
The Bulldogs had a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Evansville's first corner came in the 87
th minute as they began their late flurry.
Tuesday night's contest was Butler's last prior to BIG EAST play beginning this weekend. The Bulldogs will host Creighton on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Varsity Field on the northwest edge of campus. The rematch of the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament championship match will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network, part of the FOX Sports Go app.
