Four magnificent saves from keeper
Eric Dick and a goal in the 31
st minute by
Brandon Guhl gave Butler a 1-0 win at Providence Saturday night in a key BIG EAST match.
The win improves Butler to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. More impressively, Butler's two BIG EAST wins have come against the only two teams – Creighton and Providence – picked ahead of the Bulldogs in the conference's preseason poll.
All eight of Butler's matches this season have been one-goal decisions.
Guhl's league-leading seventh goal of the season proved to be his first game-winner. As PC tried to clear the ball up the left side,
Lewis Suddick intercepted a pass and feed it to
Isaac Galliford in the far right corner. His short cross made it to the edge of the six-box where Guhl was able to flick it out of the air by Providence keeper Colin Miller.
The assist was Suddick's fifth of the season.
Dick made diving saves in the 27
th and 42
nd minutes, respectively, using his left knee in both cases to redirect point-blank shots from Danny Griffin and Matt DePerro. He made four saves in all, posting his third shutout of the season and the 22
nd solo shutout of his Butler career.
After Butler controlled a majority of possession throughout the first half, Providence turned it on for much of the final 45 minutes. The best chance for the host Friars came in the 75
th minute as Alex Dacosta collected a long corner kick and fired a low pass through the box. In a crowd in front of the net, PC's Liam Wilson was unable to connect on a shot.
Butler had a 15-10 advantage in shots, led by five from Suddick. Guhl's goal came on his only shot of the match as he now has seven goals on only 11 shots this season.
Butler is 5-1 in the six matches that Suddick has appeared in; he has been part of the game-winning goal in each of those five matches (one goal, four assists).
PC's Colin Miller made on save in goal. Providence is now 0-1-1 in BIG EAST play and 2-5-1 overall. The Friars started the season against Top 10 opponents North Carolina and Wake Forest.
The Bulldogs return home Saturday (Sept. 30), hosting St. John's in another BIG EAST battle. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the ButlerBulldogs Facebook page.
