The Bulldogs travel to DePaul Saturday afternoon as Butler returns to BIG EAST play. The 2 p.m. (Eastern, 1 p.m. Central/Chicago) in Chicago will feature a live stream provided by DePaul.
Butler enters the match at 2-8-2 overall and is 0-4 in BIG EAST play. DePaul is 1-2-1 in conference action and 4-6-2 overall.
The Bulldogs have five BIG EAST matches remaining, beginning with Saturday's contest. The top six teams in the conference standings qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Despite the 0-4 record, the Bulldogs are only four points out of sixth place in the standings at the near-midpoint of the regular season. DePaul is one of three teams tied for sixth currently with four points.
THE SERIES: In a series that dates back to the 1989 season, Butler owns a 5-2-2 lead in the all-time series between the two programs. That includes a 2-0 win in Indianapolis in 2017. Butler is 1-1-2 in four meetings in Chicago over the years. The teams have played every season since the Bulldogs joined the BIG EAST Conference prior to the 2013 season. During that time, the programs are level at 2-2-1.
ONE YEAR AGO: Two goals from
Brandon Guhl propelled the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over DePaul Oct. 14, 2017 at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. Guhl's goals came in the tenth and 81
st minutes. The first goal was unassisted as Guhl intercepted a failed clear by Blue Demons keeper Quentin Low. Guhl then beat Low 1v1. For the second goal,
Isaac Galliford played a ball through to
Alex Lehtinen on the left side, who sent a low cross in front of the goal that Guhl was able to score with a low shot to the bottom right corner.
LAST TIME OUT: Twice the Bulldogs battled back from one-goal deficits, but could not do it a third time as SIUE captured a 3-2 win over Butler Tuesday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. Lachlan McLean's second goal of the match, which came in the 77
th minute, proved to be the game-winner for the visiting Cougars, who are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll. Butler out-shot SIUE, 13-7, and had eight corner kicks to just one for the Cougars. However, SIUE made each of their opportunities count in taking the win.
ADD HIM TO THE LIST: Freshman
Jack Haywood picked up the first goal of his Butler career Tuesday against SIUE, converting a penalty kick in the 36
th minute. He joins classmates
Louie Bulger,
Eric Conerty, and
Eric Hollenkamp in finding the net in their first year.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Senior captain
Joe Moulden is the only Bulldog to play all 1,146 minutes so far this season. His classmate and fellow center back
Kieran Geldenhuys has played all but 12 minutes in the team's 12 matches. Moulden picked up his first goal of the season with a second-half header off a
Jared Timmer cross against SIUE. It marked the third goal of Moulden's career.
FOUR SCORE AND…: Butler scored four goals in a match (vs. Marshall, Sept. 26) for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016. Butler has scored two or more goals in six of the team's first 12 matches this season. The Bulldogs scored two or more goals in five of the team's first 12 matches in 2017.
NEW TO THE LINE-UP: Butler's starting XI at Evansville Oct. 2 featured
Ryan Clark,
Eric Hollenkamp,
Joel Harvey,
Ethan King and
Justin Savona for the first time in 2018. The starts for Hollenkamp, King and Savona were the first of their respective Butler careers. Hollenkamp became the seventh true freshman to register a start for the Bulldogs this season, joining
Gabriel Gjergji,
Louie Bulger,
Jack Haywood,
Eric Conerty,
Griffin DeBolt, and
Logan Lee.
HELPING FOOT:
Marco Charalambous assisted on three of Butler's four goals against Marshall Sept. 26. He becomes the 12
th Bulldog in program history to have three assists in one contest in addition to Matt Morgan, who had four helpers against Valparaiso in a 1991 match.
HONOR ROLL: Captain
Jared Timmer earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll after scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie last week at Evansville. Both of Timmer's goals came as the Bulldogs were playing a man down. Timmer also led the Bulldogs with four shots against Georgetown. The two goals at Evansville were his first scores of 2018.
DOUBLING UP: Junior
Alex Lehtinen scored both goals for the Bulldogs Sept. 22 against Providence, the first multi-goal game of his Butler career. Lehtinen started the scoring with a goal in the 25
th minute; he then followed that by converting a penalty kick in the 88
th minute. For his efforts, Lehtinen earned a spot on the BIG EAST's five-member weekly honor roll.
UP NEXT: Butler takes its final break from BIG EAST play, traveling to nationally-ranked Indiana Tuesday night. The 7:30 p.m. kick will air on the Big Ten Network.
