Butler defeated DePaul, 91-78, Saturday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs shot 54 percent from the field and held the lead for all but 27 seconds.
Butler, winners of three of their last four games, improves to 15-11 overall and 6-7 in BIG EAST play. DePaul falls to 13-11 (5-8).
Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He added five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Baldwin scored Butler's first eight points of the game. He has scored 20 or more in eight games this season, including five BIG EAST match-ups.
"We knew it would be a tough battle tonight, based on where we stood in the conference standings and both teams coming off a loss," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "Our depth really helped us tonight. We were hit with some foul trouble, but had fresh bodies ready to do. Our bench was really good. The guys played together; the ball moved and we found each other. I know our guys are excited to attack this final third of the conference schedule."
DePaul actually out-shot the Bulldogs, 54.9% to 54.4%; however, Butler's greatest advantage came from behind the arc as Butler made 12 of its 28 three-point attempts. Butler is now 9-2 on the season when hitting 10 or more three-pointers.
The decisive run came after DePaul had cut the lead to one point at 57-56 with 13:39 to play. Butler countered with the next 11 points, including three-pointers from
Nate Fowler,
Paul Jorgensen and
Henry Baddley.
The Bulldogs had 18 assists against only eight turnovers. This was Butler's eighth single-digit turnover game of the season.
Sean McDermott (15),
Paul Jorgensen (11) and
Jordan Tucker (11) joined Baldwin in double figures for the Bulldogs. McDermott led Butler with six rebounds.
Butler out-rebounded DePaul, 31-23. The Bulldogs are now 8-2 on the season when out-rebounding their opponent. DePaul entered the night with a +6.3 rebounding margin, tops in the BIG EAST. Â
Butler has won 11 straight match-ups with DePaul. The Bulldogs swept the regular season series against DePaul, also winning, 87-69, Jan. 16 in Chicago.
The 91 points for Butler are the team's second-best output of the season, trailing only the 95 points Butler put up against Northern Illinois Dec. 8.
Max Strus led DePaul with 23 points. Eli Cain had 17.
Butler celebrated the life of 1989 alum Matt White with a pregame moment of silence and video. White, who ran cross country and track at Butler, lived 19 years with ALS before passing away last weekend. He inspired the 2010 Final Four team by authoring a speech that his wife, Shartrina, read to the team prior to the national semifinals in Indianapolis.
Butler next travels to Milwaukee for a Wednesday night game against Marquette. The 9 p.m. (Eastern) tip will air on CBS Sports Network. Marquette won the first meeting between the two teams in Indianapolis Jan. 30.
