HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Butler dominated the diamond on Sunday to pick up two wins over Purdue Fort Wayne. The Bulldogs won 18-3 in game one and 16-0 in the nightcap. The victories moved Butler's overall record to 8-5. The team has now won four in-a-row.
Kyle Smith,
Harrison Freed and
Zach Parker all hit home runs in game one to help Butler find the win column. Smith went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freed also ended the game with three RBI by going 3-for-5 from the plate with a homer and a double. The third Bulldog to notch three RBI in the contest was first baseman
Andy Bennett. He went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Butler owned a 3-0 lead after two full innings, but that early advantage would disappear in the third after three Mastodon runs. The Bulldogs would get three runs back in the bottom of the fifth and blow the game wide open with five runs in the sixth followed by seven runs in the seventh.
Sam Hubbe was your winner on the mound (2-0). He went six full innings and struck out 10. BU also had
Kevin Napoleon,
Derek Drees and
Benji Downs on the hill for one inning each.
Smith,
Duncan Hewitt and
Connor Dall led the charge for BU in game two. Smith and Hewitt each hit homers while Dall added two doubles. Hewitt was in the box score with a game-high six RBI. Dall had four and Smith had two.
Smith took the first pitch of the second game out of the Bill Aker Baseball Complex to give the Bulldogs a quick 1-0 lead. Three more runs scored in the third and the game would be sealed in the sixth after a nine-run inning. The second game ended during the bottom of the eighth inning due to darkness.
Connor Schultz was the winner on the mound (3-0) with seven strikeouts in six innings.
Jack Myers and
Ryan Schmit also touched the rubber for an inning for BU.
Spring Break week for Butler will begin with a Tuesday night game at North Alabama. The 'Dawgs will also travel to Alabama A&M for a single game on Wednesday.
