Xavier was able to push across a run in the bottom of the ninth to complete a 6-5, come-from-behind win over Butler Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.
Butler held a 5-0 lead after six innings before Xavier was able to put up four runs in the seventh, followed by single runs in the eighth and the ninth.
Ryan Pepiot got the start for the Bulldogs and was stellar in six innings of work. The right-hander held the Musketeers scoreless, while striking out a career-best 13 batters. He was able to scatter four hits and four walks, leaving with the 5-0 lead.
Butler's early runs came on a second-inning
Connor Dall RBI double, followed by a three-run fifth inning. In the fifth,
Zach Jarosz and
James Gargano posted RBI singles and Robbie McCarger added a sacrifice fly.
Zach Parker's second home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth, built Butler's lead to 5-0.
Luke Franzoni went 3-for-3 for Xavier, while Conor Grammes scored two runs and had two RBI. Both Musketeers had a home run. Franzoni's home run in the eighth tied the game before Jack Housinger drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to give Xavier the win.
Kyle Smith had three hits for Butler in the lead-off spot.
With the win, Xavier improves to 6-1 in BIG EAST play (15-23 overall). Butler is now 18-17 (2-5 BIG EAST).
The teams have adjusted the schedule for the remainder of the series and will now play a doubleheader Friday that is slated to begin at noon.
