@ButlerUBaseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Air Force

USAFA, Colo. – Butler moved to 25-22 on the year after splitting a pair of games at Falcon Field on Saturday. Air Force posted a 9-7 win in game one, but the Bulldogs fought back to claim a 10-6 victory in the nightcap.

Butler hit the scoreboard first in game one with Kyle Smith hitting a double to left that scored Zach Jarosz. Smith would come in soon after to make the game 2-0 on a single through the left side from Jacob Margroff.

Air Force countered with three runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the second. Martinez highlighted the action with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.

A second RBI single from Margroff would get Butler back within one, but the Falcons would add an unearned run in the bottom half of the third to make the game 5-3.

The fourth inning was exciting from start to finish. Butler got an RBI double to left center from Connor Dall and Harrison Freed would single to center, allowing the Bulldogs to take a 6-5 edge.

The lead would not hold however as Air Force scored two in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 9-6 advantage. Martinez would collect his fourth RBI of the game in the sixth with a single to center. Freed would try to get Butler back within range with a homer in the ninth, but it was not enough as the home team held on for the 9-7 outcome.

Freed went 2-for-4 in the opener with three RBI and a run scored. He followed that performance by going 3-for-4 in game two with four RBI and three runs scored.

Freed opened game two with an RBI single through the right side and would blast his 17th home run of the season over the centerfield wall in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.

BU scored five runs in the seventh inning to take control of the action. Freed was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to send the first run in and give BU a one-run lead. Nathan Dill would send a ball back up the middle of the diamond to score Jarosz and Smith.

The scoring continued with Gargano picking up a fielder's choice RBI. He would later come around to score on a single to left from Brody McGrath.

Connor Schultz got the start, but the win would go to Jack Myers (3-1). Schultz tossed the first five frames. He struck out seven and only walked two. Myers did some heavy lifting over the final four innings. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk. The one earned run he allowed came off a double in the ninth with BU up five.
