The Bulldogs take their 3-1 season record on the road, traveling to SIUE for a Tuesday night match-up. The 7 p.m. (Central, 8 p.m. Eastern) kick will be streamed live on ESPN3.
The Cougars enter at 1-2-1 with their win coming against Evansville, a team that Butler has also defeated this season.
THE SERIES: Butler is 1-3-2 in the all-time series with SIUE. All six match-ups have come since the 2014. The teams have met in each of the last five regular seasons in addition to a 2016 NCAA Tournament contest. Butler's win came at home during the 2016 season (by a score of 2-0). Later that year, the teams played to a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes in the NCAA Tournament before SIUE advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4. That match was played in Indianapolis.
LAST TIME OUT: Butler was able to generate several scoring chances, but capitalized on only one in a 1-0 win over Wisconsin Thursday night in Indianapolis. The tally came in the 49
th minute asÂ
Alex Lehtinen andÂ
Logan Lee combined to findÂ
Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., 12 yards in front of the frame. The freshman corralled the pass and took a touch to get the ball on his left foot. His bending shot found the left side of the goal past the outstretched arms of Wisconsin keeper Dean Cowdroy.
Butler keeperÂ
Gabriel Gjergji made the lead stand up, making a diving save to his left on a blast from Wisconsin's Zach Klancnik just two minutes after the Bulldogs took a 1-0 advantage.
OF NOTE:
- Butler is now 3-0 at the Sellick Bowl this season.
- The shutout was the second of the season for Butler's Gjergji, and the third of the sophomore's career. He made two saves.
- Cabrera, Jr., now has two goals on the season; both have been game-winners.
- Butler limited the Badgers to only four shots in the contest; it marked the fewest shots allowed by Butler since an Oct. 12, 2012 match against Richmond when the Spiders were also held to just four shots.
- Gjergji is one of three BIG EAST keepers to post multiple shutouts so far in 2019.
- Brandon Guhl's team-best three goals are tied for second in the BIG EAST.
- Cabrera, Jr., is averaging three shots per game, which is tied for fourth in the conference; he is tied for the conference lead with his two game-winning goals.
- Lehtinen has three assists on the season, which is tied for third in the BIG EAST. Those three assists have come in only three matches as his average of 1.0 assists per game is tied for the conference lead.
Â
YOUNG GUNS: Butler's Starting XI against Wisconsin featured five sophomores, two true freshmen, and
Rhys Myers, a newcomer to the Butler program after two seasons at junior college Eastern Florida State. Freshman
Hemi Nasser has also started two matches this season (in addition to Cabrera, Jr., and
Perrin Barnes, who started against Wisconsin).
Jack Streberger and
Brendan Hicks, a pair of redshirt freshmen, have also played their first collegiate minutes this season. Â
ONE YEAR AGO: Twice the Bulldogs battled back from one-goal deficits, but could not do it a third time as SIUE captured a 3-2 win over Butler Oct. 9 at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
Lachlan McLean's second goal of the match, which came in the 77
th minute, proved to be the game-winner for the visiting Cougars.
Butler out-shot SIUE, 13-7, and had eight corner kicks to just one for the Cougars. However, SIUE made each of their opportunities count in taking the win. Butler's goals came via
Jack Haywood (penalty kick) and
Joe Moulden.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs return to the Sellick Bowl for a Friday night match-up with Georgetown. The contest against the Top 10 Hoyas also serves as the BIG EAST opener for both teams. The match will be streamed via the BIG EAST Digital Network.
While Butler has a mid-week contest at SIUE, Georgetown will arrive in Indianapolis with almost a full week of rest. Their most recent outing was a 4-1 win over UConn Saturday in the nation's capital. The Hoyas are 5-0 this season.
