@ButlerMSoccer and No. 4 Indiana Set for Tuesday Night Match-Up in Indianapolis

The Bulldogs welcome another Top 10 opponent to the Sellick Bowl Tuesday night. This time, it is No. 4 Indiana.

Butler is in the middle of a three-game stretch against Top 10 opponents at home. It began Friday with No. 3 Georgetown and will conclude Saturday when No. 9 St. John's visits.

The Bulldogs are 3-3 on the young season, with all three victories coming at home. The Hoosiers enter the match at 4-0-2.

TICKET/PARKING INFORMATION: Tickets are $10 on gameday ($7 through Monday evening); event parking is $10/car.

HOW TO WATCH: Tuesday night's match will be streamed live on the Butler Athletics YouTube channel. A link is available on the schedule page of ButlerSports.com. Greg Rakestraw will have the play-by-play call; the production is being coordinated by students within Butler's College of Communication.

THE SERIES: Indiana holds a 23-4-4 record in the all-time series between the two programs, but the teams have been much closer over the past 11 meetings. In that span that dates back to the 2009 season, IU has a slim 5-3-3 advantage, and the teams needed overtime in five consecutive meetings (2013-17). The teams played to a draw in 2017 (0-0 in Indianapolis), 2015 (2-2 in Indianapolis) and 2014 (0-0 in Bloomington). Indiana won, 3-2, in overtime in Bloomington in 2016. Butler won the 2013 match-up, 3-2 in double-overtime, in Indianapolis. Two of the recent meetings have seen teams overcome 2-0 deficits as Butler did in 2015 to earn a 2-2 draw and as Indiana did in 2016 in taking a 3-2 overtime victory.

ONE YEAR AGO: The host Hoosiers came away with a 3-0 win in Bloomington Oct. 16. Indiana entered the match ranked No. 2 nationally.

Justin Rennicks got Indiana on the board first with a diving header that found the net in the fifth minute. The Hoosiers would double the lead in the 23rd minute as Trevor Swartz served up a corner that Timmy Mehl headed in for his first goal of the season.

As Butler began to increase possession and their attack, Indiana put the match out of reach as Trevor Swartz played a long ball to Spencer Glass, who was able to get behind the Butler defense and send a blast to the upper left corner of the frame.

Indiana had a 14-11 edge in shots, but 6-2 in shots on goal. Griffin Dorsey led the Hoosiers with five shots.

TWO YEARS AGO IN INDY: In front of more than 6,000 fans, Butler and No. 1 Indiana played to a 0-0 tie Oct. 18, 2017 at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. Butler keeper Eric Dick posted the shutout. Each team took eight shots. The Bulldogs played without center back Joe Moulden, who sat out the match due to accumulated yellow cards. Coach Paul Snape only played 12 players, 10 of which went the 110-minute distance.

LAST TIME OUT: Third-ranked Georgetown used three second-half goals to pull away from Butler in taking a win Friday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. The match served as the BIG EAST opener for both teams.

With the 3-0 result, the Hoyas improve to 6-0 on the season; Butler falls to 3-3.

Butler was able to get into the halftime locker room with the score still 0-0 thanks to three saves from keeper Gabriel Gjergji in the opening 45 minutes. That included a save on Georgetown's Derek Dodson from point blank range in the sixth minute.

The momentum shifted to Georgetown 90 seconds into the second half as Jacob Montes took a feed from Dylan Nealis and wrapped a shot inside the right post for a 1-0 Hoyas lead. Georgetown added goals in the 75th and 82nd minutes.

OF NOTE:
  • Butler and Indiana have played one common opponent so far in 2019: Wisconsin. The Bulldogs defeated Wisconsin, 1-0, Sept. 12 at the Sellick Bowl. Indiana defeated the Badgers, 3-1, Friday night in Bloomington in the team's Big Ten opener.
  • Gjergji finished with five saves for the Bulldogs against Georgetown, one match after posting a career-high nine saves against SIUE Tuesday night. Gjergji's average of 4.33 saves per game is second in the BIG EAST.
  • Friday's loss was the first this season for the Bulldogs at the Sellick Bowl; Butler is now 3-1 at home.
  • Tuesday's tally against SIUE marked sophomore Griffin DeBolt's first collegiate goal; it was also the first points of DeBolt's Butler career.
  • With a helper on DeBolt's goal Tuesday night, Jack Haywood now has three assists on the season, tying Alex Lehtinen for the team lead. Haywood and Lehtinen are tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in that category.
  • Senior forward Brandon Guhl returned to the field Friday night against Georgetown after missing the SIUE match due to injury. Butler is still without All-BIG EAST performer Jared Timmer, who has yet to play in 2019 due to an injury sustained in the preseason.
  • Guhl's team-best three goals are tied for sixth in the BIG EAST.
  • The 1-0 shutout over Wisconsin Sept. 12 was the second of the season for Gjergji, and the third of the sophomore's career.
  • Gjergji is one of four BIG EAST keepers to post multiple shutouts so far in 2019.
  • Both of freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr.'s goals this season have been game-winners, tying for the BIG EAST lead.
  • Cabrera, Jr., is averaging 2.33 shots per game, which is tied for eighth in the conference.
  • Butler limited Wisconsin to only four shots in the win Sept. 12; it marked the fewest shots allowed by Butler since an Oct. 12, 2012 match against Richmond when the Spiders were also held to just four shots.
  • Freshmen Cabrera, Jr., Hemi Nasser, and Perrin Barnes, along with junior college transfer Rhys Myers, have all started multiple matches in their first season at Butler. Jack Streberger and Brendan Hicks, a pair of redshirt freshmen, have also played their first collegiate minutes this season.
  • Butler has relied mainly on youth so far in 2019. Fifteen Bulldogs have logged at least 100 minutes so far this season. That includes three seniors, two juniors (one of which is newcomer Myers), seven sophomores, and three true freshmen.
  • Kenzith Andrew and Michael Cohen logged the first minutes of their respective Butler careers late in the second half of Friday's match; Usman Gil Ivern played his first minutes of 2019.
  • Butler and Georgetown each had 20 players see action Friday night.
