No. 9 St. John's Visits @ButlerMSoccer Saturday Night at the Sellick Bowl

For the third consecutive game, the Bulldogs welcome a Top 10 opponent to the Sellick Bowl. It's No. 9 St. John's on Saturday night.

The stretch began Sept. 20 with No. 3 Georgetown, and No. 5 Indiana followed Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs are 4-3 on the young season, while the Red Storm enter 7-1. This is the second BIG EAST match of the season for both teams. Butler fell, 3-0, to Georgetown, while St. John's topped Xavier, 3-1, in their respective BIG EAST openers.

HOW TO WATCH: The match will be streamed live on the Butler Athletics YouTube channel. A link is available on the schedule page of ButlerSports.com. The production is being coordinated by students within Butler's College of Communication.

THE SERIES: St. John's holds a 7-2-1 advantage in the all-time series with Butler, including a 4-2 edge since the teams became BIG EAST rivals in 2013. The teams have split the last four contests with each team holding serve on its home turf (St. John's in Queens, N.Y., in 2018 and 2016, and Butler in Indianapolis in 2017 and 2015). St. John's does have one win at the Sellick Bowl, which came in 2013.

The Red Storm and the Bulldogs played four times at neutral sites prior to Butler joining the BIG EAST in 2013, with St. John's going 3-0-1.

ONE YEAR AGO: St. John's scored two goals in the first 21 minutes of Sept. 29, 2018 match with Butler and saw that score hold in a 2-0 victory. The teams met in Queens, N.Y.

Brandon Duarte scored in the 13th minute and then Skage Simonsen headed in his fourth goal of the season eight minutes later for the early 2-0 lead.

St. John's posted the shutout with Lenny Wilson in goal. He made four saves. Each team took 12 shots. Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made three saves on the evening.

LAST TIME OUT: Butler took advantage of nearly every opportunity it had Tuesday night in knocking off No. 5 Indiana, 2-1, at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. A raucous crowd of 4,312 witnessed the Bulldogs' victory, as the home team improved to 4-3 on the season. Tuesday night marked the first loss of the season for the Hoosiers (4-1-2).

Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji was stellar in goal throughout the night. His diving save on Victor Bezerra's penalty kick in the 17th minute provided a momentum swing that the Bulldogs sorely needed.

Six minutes later, Brandon Guhl converted Butler's first shot of the night into a goal, taking a long pass from beyond midfield from sophomore Jack Haywood, getting it to his feet between Indiana's two center backs, and beating IU keeper Sean Caulfield with his right foot from eight yards out.

Guhl's goal would be Butler's only shot of the first half. Gjergji made four saves in the opening 45 minutes. Indiana had back-to-back corner kicks in the final minute of the first half, with a header finding the net just after time expired.

Butler senior captain Alex Lehtinen put the Bulldogs up 2-0 in the 52nd minute, taking a pass from Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., and sending a low liner inside the right post.

Indiana continued on the offensive, largely with shots off target over the final 35 minutes. The Hoosiers were able to cut the lead in half in the 83rd minute when a Butler defender headed down an Indiana corner kick, finding the feet of Jack Maher, who deposited the ball.

Over the course of the final minutes, Butler was able to withstand an onslaught of pressure, making enough clears to secure the win.

OF NOTE:

  • Butler is now 4-1 at the Sellick Bowl this season.
  • Senior forward Brandon Guhl has a team-best four goals on the young season. That mark is tied for third in the BIG EAST.
  • Guhl missed the SIUE match Sept. 17 due to injury. Butler is still without All-BIG EAST performer Jared Timmer, who has yet to play in 2019 due to an injury sustained in the preseason.
  • Assisting on Brandon Guhl's game-winner Tuesday night, Jack Haywood now has four assists on the season. His four assists are tied for second in the BIG EAST. Teammate Alex Lehtinen is tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with three assists.
  • Lehtinen picked up his first goal of the season in the win over Indiana Tuesday night.
  • Gjergji posted a career-high nine saves against SIUE Sept. 17. Gjergji's average of 4.43 saves per game is third in the BIG EAST.
  • The Sept. 17 tally against SIUE marked sophomore Griffin DeBolt's first collegiate goal; it was also the first points of DeBolt's Butler career.
  • The 1-0 shutout over Wisconsin Sept. 12 was the second of the season for Gjergji, and the third of the sophomore's career.
  • Both of freshman Wilmer Cabrera, Jr.'s goals this season have been game-winners, tying for the BIG EAST lead.
  • Butler limited Wisconsin to only four shots in the win Sept. 12; it marked the fewest shots allowed by Butler since an Oct. 12, 2012 match against Richmond when the Spiders were also held to just four shots.
  • Freshmen Cabrera, Jr., Hemi Nasser, and Perrin Barnes, along with junior college transfer Rhys Myers, have all started multiple matches in their first season at Butler. Jack Streberger and Brendan Hicks, a pair of redshirt freshmen, have also played their first collegiate minutes this season.
