Sabins Takes Pinehurst Intercollegiate Title with Final Round Capped by Three Birdies

Final Results (PDF)

Closing with three consecutive birdies, Butler's Logan Sabins took medalist honors at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event concluded Sunday in North Carolina.

Sabins shot a one-under 70 in Saturday's second round to move to the top of the leaderboard. After relinquishing the lead midway through his Sunday round, Sabins put together an incredible closing stretch.

Starting on the 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8 course's tenth hole Sunday, Sabins parred his first nine holes. He encountered trouble after making the turn to No. 1 with bogeys of holes No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4. After righting the ship with a pair of pars, Sabins got hot down the stretch with birdies on holes No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9. His even-par round of 71 Sunday put him at 214 (+1) for the tournament and gave him a three-shot win over three players.

Among that group in second was Butler's Michael Cascino. He shot a two-over 73 Sunday to finish at 217 (+4). Cascino entered the final round among two players who were one shot off his teammate's lead.

Butler finished in a tie for seventh in the 12-team field. The Bulldogs were consistent with rounds of 301, 299 and then 300 Sunday.

Dayton was able to hold onto its 36-hole lead to take the team title at 885 (+33). Abilene Christian climbed into second place (887; +35) with the round of the day Sunday at even-par 284. Wofford finished in third at 888 (+36).

The Bulldogs tied Old Dominion and George Washington for seventh at 900 (+48). Butler was one shot better than BIG EAST rival DePaul and 19 shots better than Xavier, which finished 12th.

Raymond Sullivan shot an 81 Sunday. At 236 (+23), he finished in a tie for 60th. Stephen Kocerha finished in 63rd at 237 (+24) after a closing-round 77, his best performance of the weekend. Nick Williams tied for 64th at 238 (+25). He shot 79 Sunday.

Augie Hartnagel, playing as an individual, shot 86 Sunday and 260 over the 54 holes. He finished in 70th.

The Bulldogs are next in action March 29-30, hosting the Butler Spring Invitational at Highland Golf Club in Indianapolis.
